To me, it seems like t his person wants to move on from whomever but wants to do it at his own pace, and even though he is trying to get over her, she's leaving and not letting him have closure.

he feels her walking out on him, and he is powerless to do anything. everything in his life is just breaking down, and he feels miserable. and since this society emphasizes sex so much, and there are so many gorgeous girls all around (take "toffee pop," for instance), he is constantly reminded of the physical relationship he'd had with his girlfriend, and that makes him feel even more miserable because he'll never have that again. so he needs a "sex change," in that he needs a new physical relationship. i think it's beautiful, and i certainly know the feeling
