Wow, this song I can TOTALLY relate to. It's about change and how hard it can be. And it talks about how you can hope to be someone else but in the end you really can't change who you are. I love this song, it was the first Bright Eyes song I heard.. It never gets old. So pretty. When I listen to this song, I think of the narrator, I suppose Conor, going on tour, and meeting a woman/many women. "There is nothing for which I am responsible Just this baggage that I keep carrying on as if I had someone" -He didn't 'have' this person, meaning they never actually dated. He still has her on his mind. "Ok, maybe there is a woman somewhere Who's still thinking of me Or a girl with coal black hair Who's haunted in her dreams But what they've seen, well, it wasn't me It was just some lie that they slept beside" -So basically he's saying that there is a woman 'somewhere'; perhaps it was a one-night-stand type thing with someone he met while touring and he doesn't even remember where she lived. "So will you look for me in that strange, bright place Where the statues bloom in the park? They don't need no rain" -This makes me think of heaven.. if he IS talking about heaven, he's asking her if she'll look for him there when they've both passed away. "Because how I ever got to you, I have no idea It's like some secret door, well, it just appeared So, no matter what I do from now on with my time You will always stay here in my mind I am certain of this and I am not certain of anything" -He cares about this person alot and she never leaves his mind. He feels really blessed to have met her in the first place, and that she just sort of came out of nowhere. "So I want to get myself attached to something bolted down So that these winds of circumstance won't keep blowing me around" -He wants to be in a solid relationship, with someone who won't leave him due to circumstances, maybe distance or something. "To when I land to when I leave there is enough time to sleep and sing I keep running when all I want is to lay motionless" -He feels rushed around and he needs time to breathe and stay in one place for a while. yeah I love this song. :] at first I didn't really like it for some reason but now I can't stop listening to it. I agree with what everyone's saying.. I think it's about a relationship where it's more about lust and everything. The narrator knows this, so he doesn't really waste time getting to know her. He knows that the relationship will only end up hurting him, but he doesn't care.. he probably just wants someone, it doesn't matter too much who it is. Maybe he's just really and depressed and lonely and needs someone. "Do you like to hurt? I do, do, so hurt me." I love that line.. I can relate to it alot. I also think that the part about 'a boy' is just Conor writing from another perspective. I like when writers talk from a girl's perspective.. it's cool because I'm normally screaming out lyrics about loving a girl, aha. |

It seems it's about a couple who broke up. The singer is still in love, while the other person has moved on quickly. "I will wait for you forever if you would just ask me I thought that I could change you but you changed me" The man is in love with the woman and he says that he'd wait forever for her to come back to him. Also, maybe he thought that he could change this person's mind about the break-up and win them back, but his attempts have been fruitless and it's just changed him, making him desperate and lonely. "but it doesn't feel right holding someone else's hand together on phone lines and living at two opposite ends" Pretty self-explanatory, he doesn't want to get involved with anyone else because he has his heart set on his ex. The third and fourth lines lead me to believe that their relationship was long-distance. "it scares me to think that you could find takers other than me and better than me" He's scared that his ex could find someone else to replace him, and maybe it's making him insecure and ask himself if she ever did love him at all, a typical question for someone who's been dumped. "but your head is elsewhere and I'm talking enough for both of us when will you see it's not so easy for me" It makes me think of how you could be so in love with someone but having it be unrequited. You're really into the convorsation and interested in them, and you're keeping the convorsation up, but the other person acts like they don't even care. And you're getting tired of it, you want the other person to care. "you careless and whispered insulting and bruising and I thought that you said things were improving" The ex is being careless about everything and she's not even considering his feelings. Before they broke up, perhaps she told him that their troubles were temporary and things would improve between them (which turned out wrong). "these laces are untied but my feet are still walking away" He can't seem to get over her, no matter how much he wants to. (I fall from your eyes. Your eyes I trusted. You said forever) He trusted his ex. He believed that they would be together forever, like she promised, but now that promise is broken. "erase my name from this page how can you take all these days and throw them away, as I sit here waiting for you" She's erased him from her life and he's just left waiting for her to return. "I stay up nights until stars leave the sky knowing what my dreams can take away" This hit home personally. It makes me think of when you're finally starting to forget that person, maybe you didn't think about them that day.. and then you get a dream about them and it feels like your peace and calm was taken away from you. So the man stays up all night to avoid what could could happen if he dreams about her and is reminded of his pain. (dead words for closed ears, all this is sung for you) This song is for his ex; yet she's not listening. She's moved on and the words are nothing to her. (if you are still pretending this is what's right) (why can you look at me can you only see) (sides, your side, can take away) She acts like breaking up was the right decsion for both of them, when it was only the right one for HER. "walk away from me this night is done" now he's saying 'screw this, screw you, I'm done'. |
