Underoath – Illuminator Lyrics 13 years ago
After reading over the lyrics again, I think I agree with mike (for the most part).

It seems like the song begins with him coming to an awareness of the Illuminati. Perhaps him "[Awakening] to the sound of emptiness" is a metaphor for this new awareness. He then wonders how to know whether or not he is (or has been) a part of this.

He realises that in some way, he is a part of it (a "captive"), and that he doesn't belong there, but he doesn't know the way out. The Illuminati realises that he is trying to get out, and comes to "hunt him down", but he breaks free.

He then says that he "tore out [his] naive eyes", referring to when he became aware of the Illuminati, and they "locked [him] up" when they saw that he had experienced this 'awakening'.

That's my interpretation at the moment.

I've been thinking about this as well. Being a Christian band, the most logical interpretation is that they are coming out against it/warning of it, but I haven't been able to support this (or any other interpretation) in any way based on the lyrics.

30 Seconds to Mars – Hurricane Lyrics 13 years ago
I've been thinking about the meaning of the line "Do you really want me dead or alive to torture for my sins?"

Many protestant churches believe that those who don't end up in Heaven will simply die (and remain dead) and miss out on eternity in Heaven. On the other hand, the Catholic church (and many others) believe that those who don't end up in Heaven are tortured for their sins for eternity. I think this line is referring to these two different beliefs, and asking God directly, does He really want him to either be dead or in Hell for eternity being tortured for his sins?

The answer, I believe, is an obvious "no", but I'm not going to try turn this into a religious discussion, so I'll leave it at that.

Paper Route – Dance On Our Graves Lyrics 14 years ago
In case it's not entirely obvious to somebody, the song is deeply spiritual.

"Will I know it? Will I know it when I see it?"
This is referring to Christ's Second Coming. He is questioning whether he will recognise it when it comes.

"I know that where I am is not who I should be. The Devil takes my hand and says, 'Child, come with me.'
My body shivers and aches, I can't break free. Why do the things I hate come so naturally?"
He's not satisfied with who he is, with the way he so easily gives into the Devil's temptation.

"When we see the light, when we're going home, we'll dance on our graves with our bodies below. We'll sing 'glory' and 'Hallelujah'."
Again, referring to the Second Coming, when we will be resurrected and will sing and dance with joy.

Such an awesome song, one of my favourites by Paper Route.

The Morning Of – Heaven or Hell Lyrics 14 years ago
I think that the line "For the pounding and calling at a door in your little chest" is referring to Revelation 3:20, which says "Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me."

Before Their Eyes – The Me I Used To Be Lyrics 14 years ago
Wow, I can't believe nobody has pointed out that this is a direct analogy to the story from the Bible where Jesus walks across the lake through the storm to the boat that the disciples are in and calls Peter out to him on the water.

It's pretty obvious from the very start of the song, but the chorus makes it undeniable: "What if You reached out and I try to touch You? Would I be buried in the waves? I'm taking steps into the water. You're all I need."

By the way, whoever wrote these lyrics, I suggest you look up the difference between "their", "there" and "they're", as well as the difference between "your" and "you're".

Oh, Sleeper – SON OF THE MORNING Lyrics 14 years ago
Well thanks for elaborating, but like Edboy, I think you are getting things a little bit mixed up.

The Christian Bible makes all this very clear. Satan is Satan. Satan used to be called Lucifer. It's as simple as that...

Remember that Satan is the "Father of lies" (John 8:44), while Jesus is "the way, the TRUTH, and the life" (John 14:6). The Christian Bible says that there was an angel called Lucifer who rebelled against God and was henceforth called Satan. According to you, the Satanic Bible says that there are "four crown princes of hell". I know which of the two I will choose to believe...

Manchester Orchestra – I Can Feel a Hot One Lyrics 14 years ago
From the March/April issue of relevant magazine (http://www.mygazines.com/issue/353/77).

Q: Your lyrics seem to take religious imagery in rather odd directions. "Manna is a hell of a drug" recalls the blessing that God provided for His people when they were in the wilderness, but it also sounds like something Rick James might say if he lived during the exodus. What are you trying to convey through these sorts of songs?

A: (Andy Hull) That lyric is from the song "I Can Feel a Hot One", which i wrote right after getting off tour last summer. I had a few days off so my wife and I went to the beach and hung out and I kind of decompressed these emotions that you build up on tour. Touring is something that is hard on any relationship I have. Whether its with God, my wife, my family, or the guys next to me...its just always moving, never steady. Point being, towards the end of this tour I had a moment of silence in the back of the van and I cried and cried. Sometimes your body just has to cry and cry I did. It was 3am, and I'm covering my head in the back of the van so I wouldn't make a scene and I listened to "It's Hard to Find a Friend" by Pedro the Lion, a record I've listened to a thousand times before and a thousand times after...but that night it meant something more. There's an amazing line on that record that says, 'i would like to be you just for a few habit forming years laziness cuts me like fine cutlery.' And I was in so many words, moved. The song (I Can Feel A Hot One) talks about that night and a combination of a few other 'losing it' moments from tour. All in all, manna is an amazing concept. The story goes that God gave them more than enough food to survive, but He required faith. If the Moses led group took more food than they needed just for that day then the food would spoil...and they continued to take more than they needed. That's kind of the perfect example of the way I stumble through life- always wanting more, never being satisfied, but continually being blessed for something I don't deserve."

I think in our band we know what our purpose is here and we know why we're here but it's hard to not take advantage of that sometimes and, you know, I'm in a band and it's easy sometimes but it's just a cry to God. With our hands up high we're screaming
Whoa whoa oh, whoa whoa oh.

I'm not afraid to make big mistakes,
I'm not afraid to fall flat on my face.
I need to get this looked at,
Need to get this looked at.
I need some time to think
About what I've done, oh.
One last thing before I go...

With our hands up high we're screaming
Whoa whoa oh, whoa whoa oh.
And with our feet we stomp a cadence for you.

It's all free and that's real,
It's all free, you said.
I need to accept, I need forget, I guess.
I'm glad I got this looked at,
Finally got this looked at.
I'm so glad you came for me.
Get this, get this right before we go.

With our hands up high we're screaming
Whoa whoa oh, whoa whoa oh.
And with our feet we stomp a cadence for you.

I am the one who needs you. [x3]

With our hands up high we're screaming
Whoa whoa oh, whoa whoa oh.

Leeland – Lift Your Eyes Lyrics 14 years ago
From Leeland:

"When we were recording the demo of this song, we didn't have any verses yet, so Leeland was just recording a scratch vocal. And usually when we don't have lyrics yet, he just mumbles random things. Well, literally, in one scratch vocal take, Leeland 'wrote' all the verses of this song. [Laughs] At the end of it, we just kind of looked at him and were like, "Those were actually really good lyrics!"--Jack
"The funniest thing about that for me was the only lyric idea I had going into the scratch vocal was the first line: It feels like your world's crashing down. And when I started singing, these lyrics just kept coming and kept rhyming. (Laughs) I was like, 'Where are these coming from? This is so random, this has never happened to me before.'"

Leeland – Pure Bride Lyrics 14 years ago
From Leeland:

"Over the course of a couple months, I heard about a lot of ministry friends of mine or people that I knew falling off in their faith or something happening that caused their whole ministry to fall. It didn't scare me, but it made me more aware that if that person fell, then I'm not exempt from that temptation of sin. And I began to look at that aspect and just pray, 'God, just give me a pure heart.' When I wrote this song, I really wrote it to myself--singing it to myself, not directing it at anyone else. To me, this is one of the first prophetic songs we've ever really had, because it talks about the Coming of God. And I hope it really encourages people to come back to a place of righteousness before God. It encouraged me to do that."

Leeland – Via Dolorosa Lyrics 14 years ago
From Leeland:

"I wanted to write a song about the cross--Jesus coming down and what He did on the cross, about how He became a man, and how humbling that was, and how awesome it was for us that He did. When I brought the unfinished song to Ed [Cash, producer] and Jack, Ed said, 'I've always wanted to write a song about the Via Dolorosa. It's always been one of my biggest passions. But I've never had the right idea. What if we have this song not only talking about the cross, but talking about the road of suffering that Jesus walked on?' So we got so deep into it that we started pulling up pictures of the Via Dolorosa and clips of the The Passion of The Christ. We were praying and reading different scriptures about Jesus being beaten and bruised and walking down the road."

Leeland – Follow You (Feat. Brandon Heath) Lyrics 14 years ago
From Leeland:

"This song was a lot slower at first, but we decided to speed it up, because it gives it more of an urgency. The message of it is so strong--calling out people, saying, 'We've got to do something. We've got to follow God where He is going. And the direction God is going is taking care of the needy, taking care of the broken.' One of my favorite lines on the record is in this song: 'You live among the least of these, the weary, and the weak/And it would be a tragedy for me to turn away.'"

Oh, Sleeper – SON OF THE MORNING Lyrics 14 years ago
You say that Lucifer and Satan are considered two different people? Who is it that considers them to be two different people? You?

I've never heard of this concept of them being considered two different people, could you please elaborate on that? I've only ever thought of them as the same person, however this person had one name whilst in Heaven and another after being cast out of Heaven.

This makes sense as the same process (but in reverse) occurs throughout the Bible. For example, Saul's name was changed to Paul after his conversion as he was like an entirely different person. Similarly, Lucifer's name was changed to Satan after his rebellion as he too was like an entirely different person after this.

Oh, Sleeper – SON OF THE MORNING Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the position taken in this song, the position of Satan, fits perfectly into what the band was trying to do. That is, this album was supposed to be a concept album that deals with the battle between Satan and God and their respective kingdoms. It seems appropriate for them to take on the persona of Satan as I don't think this song would be as powerful if it was sung from an objective and seperate point of view.

Saosin – Say Goodbye Lyrics 14 years ago
I interpreted the lyrics as:

You seem so disappointed within,
This act of yours is just a sin.
You know it's so easy to tell you abuse it,
Don't tell me you're useless.
They told me you're happy now.

I can't keep holding you up,
I'm overcome by the weight of the mud
Drying up around you.
You know I'll never forget you.
I can't keep holding you up.
Tell me if you ever stop.
I'll never forget you, oh no.
I'll never forget you.

Say goodbye, it's all you wanted.
Find somebody who cares,
I'll open the window so you walk in.
Say goodbye, it's all you wanted.
Let's hope somebody cares
And you'll see that nobodies watching.

Tell me why you wanted to change.
Tell me why you're so nervous to say
What you're really thinking.
The feeling of sinking is setting in.
You used to being so much happier.

You can't turn away.
Make up your face and get high,
Make up your face and get high again.
You can't turn away.
Make up your face and get high,
Make up your face and get high again.

'Cause when you sign your deal
You're as good as dead.

Say goodbye, it's all you wanted.
Find somebody who cares,
I'll open the window so you walk in.
Say goodbye, it's all you wanted.
Let's hope somebody cares
And you'll see that nobodies watching.

Saosin – The Alarming Sound Of A Still Small Voice Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm not sure what the meaning of the song is, but I think the title is a reference to 1 Kings 19:11-13.

"11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:

12And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

13And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?"

The "still small voice" is the voice of God.

Anberlin – Miserabile Visu (Ex Malo Bonum) Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree with bustinloose that "The man from seven hills is again the beast. The seven hills are the seven heads which the beast has." For anyone interested, I'm going to go a bit deeper into what this is all referring to.

Revelation 12:1-5, "And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne."

Let's interpret this. The dragon is Satan. The woman is the church. Notice though, the dragon has seven heads. What do these seven heads represent? Revelation 17:9, "And here is the mind which hath widsom. The seven heads are seven moutains, on which the woman sitteth." These heads represent seven moutains. The seven mountains of Rome (or the "seven hills" as they are referred to in this song).

So we have Satan (the dragon) working through Rome, to kill the seed of the woman when He is born. The seed of the woman is obviously Jesus Christ. And true to the prophecy, a Roman authority named Herod did try to kill Jesus at His birth.

Oh, Sleeper – The Finisher Lyrics 14 years ago
In the Bible, the Church (Jesus' followers) is referred to as God's 'bride', so the line "You've watered among My bride and started seeds to feed your throning flight" is talking about how Satan has been planting seeds in the Church to help with his attempts to gain the throne.

I think a lot of the lyrics in this song are metaphorical/symbolic, such as ripping out Satan's knees if he doesn't bow to God. Anyways, I'm looking forward to when God does bring about the end to Satan's power.

Proper lyrics:

Out of time and out of inclinations, boring.
How's it feel to watch your man relenting?
Let's just say thatI might be a sucker for progress,
It's all in how you cope in spite of knowing.

You don't have to say it, I know it's all my fault.
You don't have to worry, I know it's how we are.
You don't have to say it, I know it's all my fault.
The give and take is taking its toll.

It's an honest work if I can stand up on it,
Maybe we're not as far apart as it appears.
Swallowing the blame is second nature,
I've got to keep on handling my business my way.

You don't have to say it, I know it's all my fault.
You don't have to worry, I know it's all I've got.
You don't have to say it, I know it's all my fault.
The give and take is taking its toll.

I know, it's all my fault,
I will take the fall if it takes us somewhere.
I know, it's all a bluff,
I will take the fall if it takes us somewhere.

The give and take [x3]
Is taking it's toll.
The give and take [x3]

You don't have to say it, I know it's all my fault.

The lyrics "as I lay me down to sleep, I pray some grace my soul will keep" are similar to that of a children's bedtime prayer which starts with "Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep." I'm not sure what you can make of that...

"What if we get to the sky and this was all a lie, this was all a dream?"
It sounds like the "sky" is referring to Heaven. Perhaps he is questioning his beliefs, then later in the song he answers the question with "It's not a dream, I do believe.

And found possession as I lost control.
The secret vice that proclaimed my freedom,

I’m powerless to this voice,
I’ll never prevail alone.

Desperate, we will proclaim,
That on our knees, we’re not ashamed.
And so we bow it to, bow it to,
Kneel before You.
Just like a child, here, I’m not ashamed.
No, we’re not ashamed.

And so, in urgency, we now concede,
That we are helpless in this undertow.
'Cause in surrender now, there just might be,
A new serenity that's all my own.

I’m powerless to this voice,

Bringer of pain,
Why won’t you fly away?

Now you jumped the fence,
As enemies, they transform to friends.
Spitting your venom at my back,
And asleep in the dragon’s lair.

Loyalty’s not your currency, how soon you do forget.
You think you’ve found your wings,
But you’ll never fly again.

Devastator,
Complicator,
Bringer of pain,
Why won’t you fly away?
[x2]

Fly away,
Disappear,
And just disappear,
And just fly away.
Erasing me from your memory.

Devastator,
Complicator,
Bringer of pain,
Why won’t you fly away?
[x2]
