| The Cure – Killing an Arab Lyrics

Word. Although this song alludes to a book with high literary merit, it doesn't matter; there is nothing of value in this song besides what was already written in the book.
Other songs by the Cure are a different story. |

if this song is an allegory, it definitely didn't start that way. there are way too many details that have no meaning when put in the context of the bush administration. slug probably wrote the song about being hungover, then applied the allegorical context. |

"I want a verb and you give me a noun.
What do you dream up while I tongue you down?"
anyone notice that the words "dream" and "tongue" are both verbs and nouns?
probably no significance to that. |

| I Hate Myself – Not Waving But Drowning Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
"Nobody heard him, the dead man,
But still he lay moaning:
I was much further out than you thought
And not waving but drowning.
Poor chap, he always loved larking
And now he's dead
It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way,
They said.
Oh, no no no, it was too cold always
(Still the dead one lay moaning)
I was much too far out all my life
And not waving but drowning."
the "man" in this poem was doomed from the beginning and knew it, but to the outside world he seemed like he was perfectly fine. so he was alone in his pain.
i hate myself is clever because they can pull references from not only stevie smith and coleridge, but also from dragonball-z. and all of their lyrics fit cohesively and give you chills from their raw emotion. |

| Why? – Act Five Lyrics
|
I don't really think this song is an allegory to Hamlet, and while I suppose the phrase "act five" could be in reference to Hamlet, this song is more about death in general. If you read too much into the Hamlet reference, you get a muddled version of the song's topic.
This song captures the feeling of despair regarding not only one's own death but that of the people whom one respects and loves, the people who have been mentors and guides in your life. In his experience, as a young musician, Why? is more concerned with losing those who are older than him -- specifically, his grandfather -- than he is with losing his peers. However, his attention has been captured by that nagging, persistent anxiety about death--his particularly embittered view being that "there is no grace in act five", dying is a humiliating and painful process which does not give any comfort to its participants. Rather it is filled with strife--"a snail in salt", a metaphor for the individual on his deathbed, "doesn't fall asleep with a half-smile". The hopelessness this song conveys ("There will be more than a lifetime of death in the scrambled signal snow that's left") is a view that easily attacks both those with strong religious views and those with more atheistic views.
My stab at the lyric "A circus tent and all the folding chairs fit in an old coffin for travel" is that death is similar to a circus, namely by being a grotesque, eerie performance. All in all, Yoni seems either anxious about death and what follows it, or extremely cynical and realistic -- but most likely both in combination. |

| Miley Cyrus – Wake Up America Lyrics

The sad thing about this song is that not only is it sung by a 15-year-old girl, but it sounds like it was written by one too. Miley Cyrus has been made into a pop culture commodity, a human being that is mass-marketed. She's going to have a really fucked-up life. |

| Hüsker Dü – Never Talking To You Again Lyrics

I always heard "pray" too, but it makes more sense as "phrase". It wouldn't make much sense for him to say, "I'd put you down where you belong". This is a perfect song for when you've been fucked over by someone you trusted and you need a little catharsis. Actually, the emotion is less angsty but more mellow, kind of passive aggressive, hollow acceptance of the person's betrayal. |

I'd say cum, not come. That hits a chord with me, although I think men feel that more strongly--they like to have a mirror for their virility and their ability to please, to affirm themselves. Callahan's take on this idea is sadder, just wishing that he had some purpose.
But... "on a horse". That's interesting. |

| The National – Baby, We'll Be Fine Lyrics
| 17 years ago

|
This song reminds me of a Death-of-a-Salesman type attitude, of trying to make it in the world by charisma and good looks: "Look at me, baby, we'll be fine". He bases all his dreams of success on his ego, and then finds that foundation isn't strong enough. "I had a stilted, pretending day", and he apologizes for everything. That's how I take it, at least |

I'm really glad you all told me about the Lemuria deal. I think that's hilarious. Anyway, the simple fact that this is a Pixies song makes it related to drugs. Because who writes sober about Mt. Shasta and lemur-coated women? |

I think the part about being dead for half an hour means that she had a really close brush with death, and that made her realize she wasn't living her life the way she should have been. So she's telling this person, who reminds her of herself, not to hold anything back. I think she's telling the person to take control of his own life. |

I love this song, but I can't find the full lyrics anywhere. I know for certain that there are some lines missing.
In this song, the speaker expresses a deep longing for someone and his loneliness without this person. The words to me have a connotation of loss--he used to be with the woman, but now he's lost her. |

Obviously, I wouldn't say that, and I don't speak on Songmeanings' behalf; I speak on my own, and I'm saying you're an idiot--no, not because you don't like this song, because I don't like it either. You're an idiot because you're overreacting about a goddamn song that doesn't hurt you whatsoever. Ignore it, don't be so dramatic, or actually know what hippies are. Fucker. |

Phlegethon, I agree with you that this song isn't particularly wonderful. It's also not causing any harm. Don't rely on your thesaurus all the time or on the idea that Iron Maiden is good or impressive or cool. There are better musicians (and less pretentious-sounding words) out there. Find some, and in the mean time, learn that Plain White T's have nothing to do with hippies. |

| Zwan – Honestly Lyrics

Yes, I am a pirate; I'll start out with that. And being a pirate, it frustrates me when the songs I download have been edited to make them crappy and to piss off the pirates. About half of my Zwan songs were cut apart, keeping one segment of lyrics and splicing it together so that one verse and the chorus would repeat for the entire 3-4 minutes. Baby Let's Rock! played the same four lines ("Baby I'm the greatest... inside your room") for 3:41. Sooo annoying. |

| American Football – Never Meant Lyrics

WhiteTide, you could try being more polite. The child who thought Tim was involved with this band was not showing any hostility toward you or anyone you should defend; he was simply misinformed. And if he enjoys this band more than Cap'n Jazz, Joan of Arc, Make Believe, Owls, or Tim Kinsellas, he is entitled to that judgment, however poor. That being said, I doubt he actually has listened to those. I have to disagree as well on the matter of Owls' lyrics--instead of "pre-pubescent whining" they are more semi-coherent rambling. But you as well are entitled to your judgment or lack thereof.
And yes, I recognize that I am bringing this up more than four years later. |

| Aceyalone – Arhythamaticulas Lyrics

|
Aceyalone is rap, but a different variety than the kind that wins Oscars in 2006. Different than the kind that has a cheap catchphrase-slash-dance to popularize as a chorus. Different than the "we're awesome, we're at the club, and we get so much ass." The lyrics to this song are a good example of the distinguishing factor: intelligence. |
