| The Decemberists – Valerie Plame Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I like it, it's kind of a nod to the Beatles in my book. I think it's intentional. | |
| Queen – Bring Back That Leroy Brown Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| the above are the lyrics to the jim croce song. it's good in its own right, really bluesy, and i think that queen does a good job of not only borrowing the character of Leroy, but also of absorbing some of the musical style as well in certain parts. | |

| Jethro Tull – I'm Your Gun Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
"it's not the gun that kills but the man behind." I love Jethro Tull. |
|
| The Bastard Fairies – Guns And Dolls Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I love this song | |
| Pixies – Dig For Fire Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I think it is a tribute to the Talking Heads, but I'm hearing it more musically than lyrically. | |
| Spoon – 1020 AM Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Or it's a radio station... I'm a dumbass. | |
| The Dandy Warhols – Bohemian Like You Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I definitely think this song is some pretty amazing parody, partly because it's not so obvious. It's kind of like a checklist of what you need to be "bohemian": Car (or lack thereof)? Check. Trendy hairstyle? Check. Vegan? Check. And in the end it's all about image, it's about creating the right impression. And a note: I'm pretty sure it's just because of the music, but it's used in the film "Man of the Year" with Robin Williams. I was just watching it and FREAKED OUT because I recognized this song, which I love. |

| Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day (Original Demo Version) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This is currently available on asthmatickitty.com (Sufjan's record label) as a celebration of Casimir Pulaski day, March 1. | |
| Sufjan Stevens – I Can't Even Lift My Head Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
"If I ever should disappear" instead of "If I should ever disappear". But that feels completely irrelevant in the face of the awesomeness of this song. |
|
| Sufjan Stevens – Borderline Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
It's like he's putting all the work into the relationship, and he only asks of her a few things, which she doesn't deliver: "And I'll take the pictures If you stay in bed I'll run down the park If you put up your head" |
|
| Spoon – My Mathematical Mind Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I always thought that this was about a relationship, so I thought that "planning for the Apocalypse" and "bringing about the Apocalypse" referred to the end of the relationship. | |
| Sufjan Stevens – A Sun Came Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Campfirestring, that's the beginning to the song "Satan's Saxophones", not the end to "A Sun Came". | |
| Spoon – 1020 AM Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Maybe it's written to someone who died or left him at 10:20 AM, and he's remembering them? | |
| Pixies – Hey Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Francis' vocal work on the line "If you go, I will surely die" is beautiful. | |
| Kings of Leon – Happy Alone Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I always thought it was "three o'clock in the morning..." | |
| The Killers – All These Things That I've Done Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| The gospel influences of this song make it pretty much the best off the album. | |
| The Fiery Furnaces – Quay Cur Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
a killick is a "leading seaman in the British navy" according to http://www.worldwidewords.org/weirdwords/ww-kil1.htm. "duke" is slang for anal sex (a very likely activity for a sailor) |

| R.E.M. – Lotus Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nymphaea_caerulea: Recent studies have shown Nympaea caerulea to have psychedelic properties, and may have been used as a sacrament in ancient Egypt and certain ancient South American cultures. Dosages of 5 to 10 grams of the flowers induces slight stimulation, a shift in thought processes, and mild closed-eye visuals. Nymphaea caerulea is very often confused with Nelumbo nucifera, the blue lotus, which contains the alkaloid nuciferine, which has sedative and muscle-relaxing properties. The active principal alkaloid in Nympaea caerulea is currently unknown.[citation needed] These psychoactive effects make Nymphaea caerulea a likely candidate (among several) for the lotus plant eaten by the mythical Lotophagi in Homer's Odyssey and in Alfred, Lord Tennyson's (fl. 1850) poem, The Lotos-Eaters. The flowers are rumored to contain aporphine, an entheogen that is purported to have divinatory properties, and nuciferine, an antispasmodic, but the Egyptian species have never been scientifically tested for these compounds.[citation needed] Used in aromatherapy, Nymphaea caerulea is purported to have a "divine" essence, bringing euphoria, heightened awareness and tranquility.[citation needed] Other sources cite anti-spasmodic and sedative, purifying and calming properties. |

| Grant Lee Buffalo – Fuzzy Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Yeah... unfortunately not a lot of comments. I was surprised too. | |
| Sufjan Stevens – Borderline Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
If we're assuming that this woman is "in bed," as is stated two lines before... by propping it up on a pillow. Maybe she's sick/dying? and that's causing both of them a lot of pain/conflict? |

| Sufjan Stevens – All Delighted People Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
While saying "perhaps Jesus?" to any Sufjan song is not a bad approach, I don't think this song is inherently about Jesus or even Christianity. I think that this song's about the isolation people feel. But he uses the weirdest metaphor... lonely people wrapping themselves in afghans, to the point that you can't tell who they are anymore. So all these sad people are isolated because they close themselves off from the world. And what Sufjan says in the second stanza, I think, is that although your sorrows feel monumental and specific for you, someone will "know enough [about your sorrow] to ache", presumably with you if you can manage to get yourself out of the afghan. On a lighter note, whenever I wrap myself up in an afghan my hair is static-y. |
|
| Sufjan Stevens – The Mistress Witch from McClure (Or, the Mind That Knows Itself) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
The mind that knows itself Has a mind to serve the other Could that mean that perhaps he sees, but his sister doesn't, and he, being older, tries to protect her from the knowledge? Just what I've always wondered... Sufjan is so cryptic. |
|
| Sufjan Stevens – To Be Alone with You Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| It's not vague that it's about Jesus... I think that has been made very obvious... but it is vague what Sufjan is suggesting with the rest of the lyrics (I'm thinking of the first stanza.) | |
| Badly Drawn Boy – The Shining Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Faith pours from your walls, drowning your calls I've tried to hear, you're not near Remembering when I saw your face Shining my way, pure timing (What I'm getting from this is she's completely distant from him, perhaps distracted by other things.) Now I've fallen in deep, slow silent sleep it's killing me, I'm dying (OK... gets a little bit morbid here. Becuase of this line, I am reluctant to believe that he's actually dying... no matter whether he is the best lyricist or not, most lyricists don't say straight out what the song's about...) To put a bit of sunshine in your life (OK... so he's longing for her, or more specifically, to give to her whatever he can...) Soliel all overyou, warm sun pours over me Soliel all over you Warm sun Now this slick fallen rift came like a gift your body moves ever nearer And you will dry this tear Now that we're here, and grieve for me, not history But now I'm dry of thoughts, wait for the rain Then its replaced, sun setting (Little bit puzzled about this... hmm.... any ideas?) And suddenly we're in love with everything Soliel all over you, warm sun pours over me Soliel all over you Warm sun From my reading of the lyrics, I think that it might be about a girl who is distanced from this boy who loves her, and perhaps she's hurt or something. All he wants to do is make her feel better, but her sorrow removes her from him so he can't help. Any other ideas? |
|
| Badly Drawn Boy – Nothing's Gonna Change Your Mind Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Um... guy's in love, girl is stubborn? Maybe she doesn't love him and he knows it's not going to work? | |
| Daft Punk – Around the World Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Michel Gondry's video for this is AWESOME | |
| Acid House Kings – This heart is a stone Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| For me, this song kind of contradicts itself. People think her middle name is Trouble, but she's like a Monday morning? Doesn't really fit, in my mind. | |
| Radiohead – Talk Show Host Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Gun & a pack of sandwiches sounds like the guy's waiting somewhere for someone who's out to get him. He knows that someone's going to find him inevitably, so he waits. A reverse siege. | |
| Andrew Bird – Case in Point Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| OK. This is pretty much my favorite song. | |
| Kings of Leon – Joe's Head Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| It's such a timeless theme... it's EVERYWHERE. Perfect for their sound though. | |
| The New Pornographers – These Are the Fables Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I love the instruments they use in this song... I heard it and was like WHOA. | |
| The New Pornographers – Sing Me Spanish Techno Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| The lyrics to this song kind of remind me of the lyrics to the Beatles' "Come Together". Someone once told me that Lennon made up the lyrics for "Come Together" on the spot while they were recording... Sounds like something the N.P.s could have done for this song, an impressionistic, spontaneous unanalyzable set of lyrics indeed! | |
| The New Pornographers – The Bleeding Heart Show Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| OK- all NP songs have AMAZING drums, but the coda to this song takes the cake. | |
| The New Pornographers – Ballad of a Comeback Kid Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Former Sen. Rick Santorum was also known as "the comeback kid." This was released in 2003, when Santorum was halfway through his second term in the Senate. He had a history of defeating incumbent Democrats, but was defeated in the 2006 election. I don't know whether it's about Santorum, Clinton or high school, but Santorum would be more relevant than Clinton. The New Pornographers are too cryptic in this song to really analyze, I think. | |
| Daft Punk – Superheroes Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This song = great improvement on Barry Manilow. | |
| Queen – The Millionaire Waltz Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Is it just me, or does Freddie inject a little sarcasm into this song and others -- I'm thinking especially "Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy" -- where he's writing lyrics so stereotypically lover-boy-ish that it comes off really tongue-in-cheek? | |
| The Verve Pipe – Real Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Definitely agree with polkablues... a really powerful song... | |
| The Crüxshadows – Wake The White Queen Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I loved this movie. | |
| Jethro Tull – Velvet Green Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
best part: August's rare delight may be April's fool. |
|
| Belle & Sebastian – Me and the Major Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| The harmonica is very Bob Dylan-esque, and thinking of that the theme of a generation gap is that too. More high-energy than most Dylan songs, but um it's B&S and it rocks. | |
| Thea Gilmore – Even Gods Do Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Shadow is a character in Neil Gaiman's book American Gods. | |
| Voltaire – Come Sweet Death Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| In the first verse, Voltaire uses the names of all (I believe) of Neil Gaiman's the Endless, from "Sandman". | |
| Future Bible Heroes – Mr. Punch Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Rodomontade, according to Dictionary.com, is "vainglorious boasting or bragging; pretentious, blustering talk." | |
| R.E.M. – Hope Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
According to dreammoods.com (the first site that came up when I googlesearched "dream interpretation): To see an alligator in your dream symbolizes treachery, deceit, and hidden instincts. It may be a signal for you to take a new perspective on a situation. It may also represent your ability to move between the material world of waking life and the emotional, repressed world of the unconscious. Alternatively, the alligator represents healing powers and qualities. To dream that you are running away from the alligator, indicates that you are unwilling to confront some painful and disturbing aspect of your unconscious. There is some potentially destructive emotion that you are refusing to acknowledge and owning up to. According to biblical interpretations, an alligator suggests that leviathan is king over the children of pride. (Psa 74:14, Job 41:1,Isa 27:1) |

| Rufus Wainwright – Little Sister Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I don't know if anyone else gets this idea, but to me this song's always been a statement on the differences in social status between a "brother" and a "sister". I see the singer and his "sister" as archetypes for men and women in general. He discusses the differences between what men do to get what they want, and what women have to do to get the same power ("you may have to use your hips as fodder"). The world is a breathless dance which the singer's little sister is swept into. This whole song gives me the same vibe, that of the 18th century typical male warning his little sister, with a touch of snobbery and self-righteousness, what she can expect of the world. After all, history is on his side. |
|
| Beck – Girl Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
and sun-eyed girl makes sense in context: although it sounds cheery, one of the other lines also reads, "with a noose she could hang from the sun and put it out with her dark sunglasses" if her eyes are the sun, but she's wearing sunglasses... |
|
| R.E.M. – New Test Leper Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Think about being on a talk show because you have a disease, "leprosy", if you will. It's the modern day freak show, and we watch it to say, "thank god I'm not like them." I think this song addresses the assumption that people have that people who are in a bad situation put themselves there. That kind of judgement, when they can never truly know what's going on behind that person's eyes, is wrong. | |
| R.E.M. – You Are The Everything Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| The old widower comment (the wordislove) makes sense. I mean, "with your teeth in your mouth"? Does anyone have any other ideas, because all I think is dentures. | |
| R.E.M. – It's the End of the World as We Know It Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Lester Bangs: Also a genius. Does anyone else find it amazing that Stipe has such crazy dreams? I mean... working out that they all had the initials LB in your sleep, then remembering and writing a song about it afterwards... holy shit. | |
