This is probably the worst thing I have ever heard with Conor's name on it. I know it's Hollingsworth singing but good lord, it sounds like a Beach Boys throwaway with whiny vocals. Total disappointment. |

Wait, wait: But Steena wears my only suit is now my all-time favorite misinterpreted lyric on songmeanings. Steena? Really? Fantastic. I think this and "trembling of the rose" are my two favorite tracks on this album--for an extra treat head over to daytrotter.com for some in-studio recordings by TWO GALLANTS that are fairly incredible. |

I'm not sure if it's MINE or MIND but either way it's my favorite part of the song. Why are there only 8 comments here by the way? This is one of the better songs written in the history of the universe, where are you people? |

If you had to make a list of the best B-sides ever wouldn't you put this in the top 10? What else would we have there? Yellow Ledbetter? |

Whoa whoa whoa...people are disappointed in this album? Are you crazy? The whole thing rips from start to finish and that's not even counting the Imports and B-sides. I guarantee if you listen to this thing again you will flip your nut or your money back. This song in particular kills me but it is by no means the strongest on the release. I agree that there's something with the focus of the album being on life in the city and then the narrator ending the album (again, not counting the imports) in a more rural setting. Sheer genius and if you don't like it I will get physical. |

It's Old Juarez for sure--oddly enough where Pedro was from in 'Napoleon Dynamite'. Not sure which version of this song I like better so I'm just going to say they're both epic...a real Bright Eyes feel to this one, pretty sprawling and epic but also personal and heartfelt. A winner for sure- |

Yeah the whole east swell and howling winds is about surfing, not the middle east. It's Jesse juxtaposing the awesomeness of a killer day at the beach with the uncertainty of being shipped out to fight a war. For those of you who think this a direct reference to Iraq or Afganistan it's probably time to move out of Iowa. |

Few things-
* If you haven't read the chain about starting this album at track #7 and listening to it in that order then check it out, the whole record makes sense if you do that. There’s a few reasons for this and they’re well chronicled elsewhere but quickly:
a) The album title is quote by Daniel Johnston
b) In the new Daniel Johnston documentary he makes a statement about “God being number 7 and the devil being number 6”
c) If you listen to the album in that order it seems to have a more cohesive, complete feel, like the battle never stops and becomes a continuum
I think the “I swear I’ll try to nail you back up” part refers to quasi-Christians acting like Jesus is dead and buried instead of (ostensibly) ‘living’ in heaven and returning “like a thief in the night”. If your perception of Jesus is just a limp, lifeless figure hanging on a cross it’s easier to keep on sinning and living the same old life, as opposed to a dynamic god. |

Shoot, I live in Santa Barbara (about 20 minutes north of Oxnard) and I can tell you in no uncertain terms that I would NOT pick any of the beaches down there if I was trying to get clean. Also dated a girl from Omaha for a while and wouldn't pick anywhere near there... |

This is also on the new "Noise Floor" release with this note about the song:
"Released on a split seven-inch that came free with DEVIL IN THE WOODS magazine's Saddle Creek issue. A sentimental song about my cousin Clare and fighter jet ballet."
Pretty much clears up the confusion about Clare. Also I'm sure the base he's singing about is Offutt Airforce Base in Bellevue, NE--just about 10 minutes outside of Omaha. I'm a SoCal kid but was dating a girl from Omaha for a few years and had the displeasure of going to a wedding reception at Offutt once. The green beans were terrible, I remember. |

Papillion is also the name of a suburb of Omaha, which is where Saddle Creek is based out of. I'm pretty sure this song is about the movie though, link below:

You want to know what's really hard though? Picking a favorite Bright Eyes album. How do you really compare FEVERS, LIFTED, and WIDE AWAKE? Sure, you can sit there and argue the merits of "From a Balance Beam", "The Calendar Hung Itself", "To Love and to Be Loved", "First Day of My Life" and all the rest until you're blue in the face but how do you really decide which record to listen to? Not easy and I feel like it's sort of cheating Conor if you just sort of go with SHUFFLE on your mp3 player since each album has such a specific feel, you know? |

Have you guys ever been to Omaha before? Even though I'm a Southern California kid all the way I've been dating a girl from Omaha for the last 2 years and have spent WAY more time driving down Saddle Creek than I ever thought I would. Anyway, Conor's songs actually seem to have more weight if you actually see where he's from--Omaha is full of military/air force kids; sons/daughters/wifes/girlfriends who have had their dads/brothers/husbands/boyfriends taken away by the government to fight and potentially die elsewhere. Without getting into the politics and the right/wrong of the situation you're left with a really interesting dichotomy--parents who are pro-military and depend on it for their survival and their kids who see it as a controlling, overtly omnipresent force. This song seems to have a lot of those same elements in it, from TAPS, to the 1984ish and ubiquitous war themes, etc. It should come as no surprise that these same thematic elements (death, war, loss) are coming up so often often his tracks. But goddamn it still sounds good, doesn't it? |

There a few different versions of this song too--you guys heard the one off of NPR? You can find it online if you search around a bit...actually like it better than the version off of "Fevers". Anyway, if you haven't heard it you should punch yourself in the face. |

If you aren't listening to this right now you should probably punch yourself in the face. I don't think Mason is a Buddhist or anything, he's just chill and respects things as they come. Also note that the title is "Ulysses", which is quite possibly the hardest to read, stream-of-consciousness book in the entire world, so it should come as no surprise that the song comes across as wonderfuly jumbled. |
