I have a different interperatation of the lyrics than most do. In this song there is a person who is basically talking to himself. It is almost as if there are two parts of him: one part that is passive (the part that actually takes action, basically the person in his entirety), and the other part is his consciousness which is the part of him that knows what he SHOULD do (I'm going to call this his conscience). The writing in all caps is a monologue by the conscience. "I'm dead as dead can be, the doctor tells me. But I just can't believe him; ever the optimistic one. I'm sure of your ability to become my perfect enemy." The "should" part of him, his conscience, has realized that he as a person has become passive, indolent and for all intents and purposes, dead. However, his conscience is very optimistic and knows that he can pull him self out of his funk. The conscience is equally as sure that the person is capable of continuing down the negative path and becomming his own worst enemy. "Wake up and face me. Don't play dead 'cause maybe someday I'll walk away and say "You disappoint me, maybe you're better off this way."" The conscience is prodding the person to take some action and quit being so passive. STOP PLAYING DEAD, GET OFF YOUR ASS, AND TURN THIS BOAT AROUND!! CUZ IF YOU DON'T, AND YEARS FROM NOW I TAKE A LOOK BACK AT YOU AND AM STILL DISAPPOINTED IN YOU, THEN I'M GOING TO QUIT ON YOU....JUST LIKE YOU'VE QUIT ON YOURSELF. "Leaning over you here, cold and catatonic. I catch a brief reflection of what you could and might have been. It's your right and your ability to become my perfect enemy." The conscience is looking over the person himself again, and this time the person seems completly gone, although in reality the person is just ignoring the conscience. As the conscience is looking over the person, he sees himself (the conscience) as if it were a reflection of what could have been if the person had just listened. YOU KNOW WHAT? FINE. IF YOU'RE GOING TO IGNORE ME THEN THAT'S IT. YOU HAVE BOTH THE RIGHT AND THE ABILITY TO DO SO, BUT KNOW THAT YOU ARE BECOMING OUR, YOUR OWN, ENEMY. "Wake up and face me. Don't play dead 'cause maybe someday I'll walk away and say "You disappoint me, maybe you're better off this way."" "Go ahead and play dead, I know that you can hear this. This is the best ballad that 10 Years has. It's off the album "Killing All That Holds You". Great song. Definately one of my favorites ever. To me, it represents death from the point of view of the dying. He sees the sadness and tears and realizes what has happened. It's nothing like what he had dreamed, but there is no way to go back. He feels that he was not supposed to go. He died too soon. Heaven and his "angel's wings" wings were not ready for him. Will he fall? What will happen? What happens when a young person dies, someone that wasn't meant to die so young? Very deep, I think. Sad too. |

Sold out? What does that even mean today? They have been signed to a major label since "s/t". If they ever "sold out" it was THEN (which I don't think is even remotely the case). Anyway, this song leaves more to be desired for sure. The different sound and tinkering with ideas definately makes waiting for this album tougher than it would have been had they come out with another "normal rocker single" such as 'Out of Control' or 'Crawling In the Dark' as they did for their first two releases. I don't think I'll be adding anything new to this discussion, but I have a few ideas that I'd like to spout out. The bridge of this song is what really clarifys that it is about heroin addiction. "Heave the silver hollow sliver" (it IS heave, listen closely) refers to pushing in a hollow needle. "Piercing through another victim" is a continuation on that point, but also eludes to the idea that another person may find their way to the same "wasteland"; yet another victim. "Turn and tremble be judgmental, ignorant to all the symbols" possibly refers to the addict's thoughts and actions towards others who are trying to interfere (help) with the addiction, but the addict cannot see the obvious signs of his/her addiction. "Blind the face with beauty paste" is talking about the addict covering up the signs with falsehoods and the final line, "Eventually you'll one day know" says that one day the game will be over, and everyone will be aware of the addicts problem (including the addict). I just thought I'd throw my 2-cents out there. One of the more confusing lines to me is "This time you've tried, All that you can turning you red, but I will not hide you through this. I want you to help" It seems that he is saying that someone close to the addict has worked so hard to help that they have turned red in the face, but to no avail. Then the last line seems to contradict that idea by saying that the addict will no longer hide the addiction from the friend and he wants help. Confusing. At any rate, 10 Years fucking rocks. This CD has been on a loop for the last 4 days. Tooooo goooood. |
