this song is about how music can sometimes be the first ideas different for kids/teens then what their parents/teachers/authority is telling them, so they are realizing their parents aren't always right

MGMT – Congratulations Lyrics 15 years ago
People are taking about how MGMT is trying to distance themselves from the fans that only like their pop songs. Someone said MGMT was planning on infiltrating the music world and then freaking everybody out. If that is true, I see it just as well they would create this album, which sounds more psychedelic then the first, and expose all these morons who give a shit about being 'indie' or trendy in anyways, and make an album much worse than the first one. While I do like some songs on this album, and I am really liking Congratulations, so many of the comments above are some of the most ignorant people ever, who seem to like music only to look better to other people, which I believe, and I feel I'm not alone on this, that the music you like doesn't make you any cooler or better of a person. One comment said that MGMT would want to distance themselves from people who like Lady Gaga but I highly doubt that. Lady Gaga is a fantastic artist, and if you can get past how 'refined' and 'indie' your music taste is, you'll notice just how impressively intentional, and enjoyable her music is. For all of the comments about MGMT's 3 pop songs, I am calling bullshit on those statements. While Time to Pretend, Kids, and Electric Feel were all fantastic songs, so much more than people here are addressing, they weren't even my favorites. Songs like Pieces of What, The Handshake, The Youth and Weekend Wars was what gave that album the substance it had. They were songs with many facets both musically and lyrically, in comparison to the overall more empty songs of Congratulations. You could feel their influences popping out from those songs, with their own flavor sprinkled throughout it. Sure, there were 3 songs on there that were highly overrated. They were Of Moons, Birds, and Antarctica, 4th Dimensional Transition, and Future Reflections, and while they are good songs as well, they are much more psychedelic rock than anything else. Then, these very hip musical elitist who would never dare listen to the radio for fear of bleeding after hearing such garbage (and it's pronounced gar bodge because of how elite they are) comment about how this new cd is the 'real' MGMT. Now, I would almost be willing to believe these people weren't constipated up to their brains if it weren't for the fact that they probably don't listen to psychedelic music at all. Climbing to New Lows was more electronic than anything, and these people probably listen to similar things I do like indie rock and twee.

Basically, I just don't believe that musical elitist know anything about music at all, and that if you think this album was better than the first one, you are either a fan of psychedelic rock, or you are a poser.

Or maybe kids from your high school would, without consent, shove an Oracular Spectacular cd in all of your orifices while playing the album. If that is the case, sorry about that, but at least you got to listen to a great album!

Billy Joel – Piano Man Lyrics 15 years ago
haha

hahahahaha

hahahahahahahahaha

"famous for pretty much this one song"

is there anyone else who ever in the history of man would agree with this statement. I am not trying to make the point that many of his songs, popular or not, are fantastic. But I am just curious if there is anyone, at any age, that actually believes Billy Joel is famous pretty much just for Piano Man. I think what we should do, is take anyone who thinks that, and use them for research, because honestly, that might be hands down the dumbest ignorant things. It sounds something the idiots known as the the Westboro Baptist Church would believe.

MGMT – Time to Pretend Lyrics 16 years ago
This song may have people struggling at the meaning. An obvious guess is that they are pretending to not care that their unhealthy shallow lifestyle is not hurting them. That they are pretending to enjoy all the abusive drugs. Still, that is not the meaning. Honestly, I've never regretted one shot of heroin that I took back when I was on that junk, even the one that made my wife leave me.

The real meaning is that, at any time, we are able to change ourselves and be what we want to be. The quote that says, mind your thoughts, they become words, mind your words, they become actions, mind your actions, they become habits, mind your habits they become personality, mind your personality, it becomes your character, or however it goes. The quote is missing the important part of needing to pretend. If we pretend to do something we don't want to do, but is better for us, such as dieting, meditating, reading, showering, yatta yatta, we then can get in a habit of doing it, and then becoming it. You are then able to do whatever you desire. Shoot heroin, marry models, or anything else you are free to do. It is only you who holds yourself back. You are the master of your own destiny. So, therefor, the usually negative connotated word pretend is shown in a positive light, ironic and brilliant as always MGMT.

Suck It!

Spoon – The Way We Get By Lyrics 17 years ago
OK, well to attack everyone on different levels,

First I'll go after the people I like most, those who hate the O.C. people. As much as I agree that the show is one of the worst shows becauses it uses predictable plot lines and sex to get people to watch it, and then tells people how life should be, if it has good music, it has good music. I hate when people act as if they are Spoon themselves, and that their music shouldn't be listened to by everyone. Spoon can give out it's rights to anyone, and so what if trendy little tweens listen to The Way We Get By and get the giggles because they said pot. I have faith in the great songs they put on those shows in that they can handle the two weeks the idiots will listen to it and then find whatever is the new hit song from the show. Although I can understand your feelings, don't let these people bother you since it isn't your music in the first place.

Secondly, I am attacking anyone naive to think that this song isn't about drugs, especailly pot, or anyone who is naive enough to put a negative connotation on pot. Obviously, the life of a stereotypical stoner is not a good one to live, but if people actually knew anything about marijuanna, you would know that it isn't going to kill you, and the damage it causes is minimal. It is a great song, so enjoy it, but don't try to pretend you don't year what you are listening to.

Thirdly, I am going to attack anyone who thinks this song is just about pot, however, this isn't really a harsh attack since you would have had to read Trainspotting to see where i am comming from. If you have read Trainspotting, it is about heroin addicts who are huge fans of Iggy Pop and The Stooges. While Spoon (like what you cook heroin on) may just also be big fans of IP, I find it odd that they would break into mobile homes, go out in stormy weather, and rarely practice dicern becuase of pot. This sounds more like someone who needs their fix, similar to the book/movie when he fishes through the shit to find the suppositories. Also, the idea that they are the sum of themselves, as in better together, makes me think that the group relies on each other for getting the gear.

As to the idea of this song being negative, I think it is sort of negative from an outsider view, and from the singer, almost negative in the fact that he is aware of all the redic stuff they do for their gear, but neutral in that it is just life for them. Sort of like the song Time to Pretend by MGMT.

The Flaming Lips – She Don't Use Jelly Lyrics 17 years ago
HUMANITY, LISEN UP!
Obviously, you can say that any song has no meaning. Often, musicians will say this about all of their songs, or just not say what it means, because the beauty of music is finding your own meaning to it. Any song lyrics are just a collection of words and sound noises, but the point of this website is to give your opinion about what the lyrics could or do mean. Saying, this song is just random words, defeats the purpose of commenting on song meanings.

I originally thought it was about people and their weird things they do, that make them unique. Then I thought it was about poor people's clever ways to save money. Lastly, I thought it was about sex, masturbation, and vanity. I guess depending on the mood I am in, I bounce in between these ideas, not to set on what my official stance on the song's meaning is yet.

khiac72, good to hear, but now I wonder why he was outside Villanova.

Also, I agree about him messing around with the underage girl, though I feel his problem is that, with her being young and immature, he has to keep acting as if he is still into her because if he upsets her, she can always just call the cops, so he wasn't willing to upset her, even though he is done with her.

Kate Nash – Skeleton Song Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about someone, not who is lacking depth, but is actually only a deep person, like the person is ugly on the outside, but a deep person on the inside, and the deep person tells Kate a lot of deep thoughts, making her feel uncomfortable, though she likes this person, he is always talking about serious things, very emotional, and she feels awkward in public with her friends, cause she can't always be stuck in the world of being deep. For him, its all bone, none of the outer stuff. That's my guess.

i thought it was about how the guy has a crush on a girl and can email her, but when he calls she is always busy, though now, after hearing the prostitute thing, i think it may be one of those sites that you talk to girls online and then meet up with them somewhere, like he is writing on her page a lot, which is making his mouth jealous of all the typing he is doing, and the reason she is medically adorable is that she has no stds.

Eminem – Till I Collapse Lyrics 17 years ago
around the time of the release of this album/song, there were alot of rappers that were considered amazing, yet not so much, and Eminem makes his list, no surprise Jay-Z being number 2 behind the Redman, and then Tupac and Biggie are often disputed as the best, so them being 3 and 4 makes sense as well. Andre, Jada, Kurupt, and Nas are all amazing as well, so it would be something Eminem would say.

The world is collapsing around a man who based everything upon religion. The song is zany and out of place, because this man put all is faith in religion, and once he realized it wasn't real, and that God didn't exist, everything falls apart, and is hectic, and random, and chaotic.

Kate Havnevik – Unlike Me Lyrics 18 years ago
I had just recently gotten into her music in finding out she is part of The World Cafe Tour in 08, and I had heard her songs on Grey's I realized after.

I think she is just saying that, since time does not really exist, since it is completely relative and only something percieved by the human brain, we should just enjoy ourselves. If you are out of the universe, you see time just as you see any other dimension like foward, vertical, and horizontal. If you read A Brief History in Time by Stephen Hawkings, it explains this much better then I could ever attempt too, which is why he is considered the genius of our time.

Kate is realizing time is not real, and since this is true, nothing really changes, because, in a larger picture, where time can be seen next to each other, nothing really changes, or matters. Life is too short and unimportant to not be happy.

Oasis – Wonderwall Lyrics 18 years ago
I wouldn't say Oasis at their best, though still a solid song for them. The song means, as many have sugested, the idea of someone to be solid in their life, like a wall to lean on. For a person doing drugs, stability is something they need more then anything, and a stable person who can just be there, consistantly stable, not letting their emotions getting in the way, but just being there through the rough times is what they need.

As for this wall, it is really screwed up.

First of all, the Beatles are clearly the most influential band of all time. Deciding if they are better then Oasis is stupid because anyone who knows anything can tell you that hearing, like all other senses, have likes and dislikes different from everyone elses, so you can never truly say which is the best music, piece of art, texture, food, or smell, because it is an individual thing.

Seccondly, meggawesome, you are a psycho who needs to stop crushing on an idiot like that. That is the dumbest story I have ever heard. Listen to your parents, and stay away from the guy. If he loved you, you wouldn't have flipped in the car.

Third, Sons & Daughters, get the fuck off your high horse, because honestly, you are a fuckin moron. I totally agree Jesus is a bunch of bullshit, but everyone has their own fuckin spirituality, and some need their religion to go on every day. I fuckin need my music, and without my iPod, I'd die. Don't think that people can't translate these songs into whatever they feel like, because everyone has rights to their own interpretations.

Lastly, deedee 20382, though I think assuming all the stupid comments on here are from teenagers makes you look like an ass, I have to agree that all the stupid bullshit posts that seem very teenage like really should not be on this website, so I congratulate you for being a rare intellect out of this wall.

Mat Kearney – Where we gonna go from here Lyrics 18 years ago
Though I heard it on Grey's, I really think it applies to the show the Office much more.

If you know the general story at the end of season two is where I am focusing. Jim likes Pam, who is married. She wants to stay with her husband because it is a sure thing, though she does have some feelings for Jim as well. They then kiss at the end of season two. From there, Jim wants to know where are they gonna go from there. Do they just pretend it never happened? Do they get together?

The song talks about those times when something happens between two people, and they want to know the dirrection they are going to take it. Friends, friends with benefits, just dating, exclusively dating, or anything else. Good song.

Billy Joel – It's Still Rock And Roll To Me Lyrics 18 years ago
Billy Joel is such a talented artist and makes some great comments about society in this song. What I got from the song is that, no matter if its pop, funk, punk, grunge, new wave, emo, or any other type of rock, it all goes back to the roots of Rock and Roll. Also, in the same sense, no matter what is popular, it will always have the same influence on the people, with the current trends.
