Iron & Wine – Burn That Broken Bed Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's about somebody who is caught in an illusion, with their head up in the clouds. The broken bed bit makes me think that this person is in a broken relationship, that they are in because of high ideals in their spouse, and they're not seeing it from a grounded point of view. Basically they are in a crappy relationship, and the singer wants them to come back down to earth so that they can have a friendship. He wants his friend to "see him", because they're ignoring him for their bf or gf who isn't good for them. And he also wants to be their eyes so that he can make them see what they are doing to themselves. "Head on the ground, feeling what you've seen" suggests crying and hurt. I almost think that "grass on your back been hanging in the air" could mean they are falling down, maybe being pushed down by this relationship, but it's hanging in the air because it's not being confronted. So they are in this relationship idealizing and not facing the problems, just ignoring them. Typical relationship, really. He wants them to come back and "sing" what they've seen, and by thus doing they would be seeing it for what it is and sharing the experience and expressing it rather than supressing the issue. He wants to scope them out because he wants to dig into the problem and find out what's going on with them. Maybe the "touch your lips" part means he wants to give them a voice to stand up for themselves. And the end "I wanna see you drifting overhead" is a kind of turn on the events, because in this case the overhead is not in a cloud or dream, but he wants to see them rise up over the problems they are having and be on top of the world again.

Pretty much describes me when I fall in love. It's not really about being obsessed with a person I don't think, it's just like certain ideals and stuff that are not as realistic as they seem.

R.E.M. – Losing My Religion Lyrics 19 years ago
Oh dear, this page is somewhat scary...

But time for my interpretation nonetheless! The lines that most draw me into my interpretation are these:
"Choosing my confessions
Trying to keep an eye on you
Like a hurt lost and blinded fool"
When I think of religion and this song I think of something of a higher power, or at least someone to look up to and revere with respect. So keeping an eye on the person is observing their actions as actions to strive for yourself. You admire somebody so much but feel innadequate yourself, so keeping up is not something you can imagine doing.

I think the song is at least twofold because the religion is an analogy of the feelings. I think that when you hold anyone on a pedistal, see them as perfect or the goal in which you would like to strive, it's very hard to taste the reality. It is fantasy, and you know you are dreaming it up, and that's when you lose your religion. Not when you're losing faith in somebody else but when you're realising you are following your ideals and you have to let go of them.

Also I think being fearful of how much you admit to the fantasy as well takes a role in this song.

And when it says
"I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try"
and then
"But that was just a dream"
I think whoever is in question here, may not be entirely real. So the "you" that is referred to, may be projected onto somebody real (even a god) but is essentally a figment.

New Age would be cool except for the totally shitty authors spewing out totally generic bullshit.
Anyway everyone is narrow-minded, I don't know about closed minded unless you're in a coma or something. And we're all proving this by calling one another narrow-minded.
The majority of Tool fans I've run into have not had much integrity, so why try to keep everyone intelligent. People are stupid, it doesn't matter what they listen to. It's how you listen to it.
omg! this is all about drugs and gay sex! the spiritual world doesn't exist. carnal lust! yay! omg omg!

Anyway, doesn't this song have way more words than that?

Gorillaz – 19-2000 Lyrics 20 years ago
calling things leet is kinda annoying, that's what that is. as for the shoeshine. the song strikes me thusly: that trying to jump into an already established life, or personality or whatever just because it's the way to go or because it's the easy route is keeping you tied to being held back. if you have no direction but the one that is handed to you (or rather, sold to you) you won't live out your potential, you're just lame and you know ... anyway, the shoes you walk in is the path in life you take, right? so making your own shoes, you are making your own path. you are making yourself, be creative with your life, don't fall to instincts, you know, go for the higher drive, expand your soul, whatever. Nike shoes are the shoes you wear if you choose to be a bum in the world and a whore and a ... I don't even know the word for it...it's just not the life to live if you want to be yourself. So basically, getting the cool shoe shine is buying into the crap around you and letting people make the path you take and just following like a mindless drone. But pfft, who cares about all that, just listen to the music and stay happy ;p

ah, america is obsessed with japan and japan is obsessed with america. who gives a shit what culture you're singing about. I'd rather this than, "I slap ma bitches'n'hos all day long cuz I'm a gangster worth a million dollars sex object! therr" *ahm* I haven't heard the song ... but I am told that the music on the album references a lot of things. I like references. Gwen's always been more about style than music in my opinion. and...nobody is worse than j-lo -- who do you think you're trying to fool?

And who would think that such a little song about fashion could create contraversy, even on the stupid interenet. Props to that.

Tool – The Patient Lyrics 20 years ago
umm, okay, I like think that this song is about like patience. Not like the kind in a doctor's office.

Honestly, I don't know what else there is to say about it. The lyrics are entirely simple. But that is all that is needed to speak the truth. Isn't this really the basis of life? To be patient? Sometimes it just feels like too much to bare ... always just waiting. Perhaps it's just me, but I've never been anyone else so I don't know - but waiting is all that I've ever done. And this song is really comforting. Sometimes I forget that life has benefits, that there are things worth waiting for. Sometimes I feel like I'm never going to get anywhere, like it's always the same - I'm just waiting and waiting forever (and HOW tedious). Like, right now I am waiting and it feels almost impossible to take. But I realize that I'm still here, that I'm waiting anyway. It's not always so bad ... looking back the waiting has done...something...maybe very small, but something is all I need. I've gained so much, why give up the wait now?

You can take the song as subjectively as you want, but there is only one interpretation behind it by anyone here - the song is about being patience, and the reasons for be such. There is really no contraversey on that one.

Tool – The Grudge Lyrics 20 years ago
Saturn returns are apparently intensely stressful - though possibly transformitive. Good luck if you're weak come your second return. Grudges are pretty damn stressful. But depending on how you handle it, I suppose it could change your life too - the way you act and think. 30 years would be an awful long time to hold a grudge.

There's this girl I know who holds a grudge against me. She doesn't ever tell me this. But I know it's there, and she tells other people. Maybe her reason is good, maybe not. But it's really only detrimental to her right? Wrong. It kind effects me too. Perhaps I am the one with the grudge. Oh, I can't get it straight anymore.

Tool – Reflection Lyrics 20 years ago
I'm...not going to bother reading through these descriptions. But somebody say, "you look way too deep into tool's lyrics". Whoever that was, I laugh at you. You can't look too deep into poetry...there is no "too deep" unless it's something that might hurt you or someone else.

Anyway, I don't care about the "big picture" because everyone's already mentioned it.

I am wondering if anyone else feels slight connections to astrology. This is my subjective view. When it says, "in my darkest moment, fetal and weeping, the moon tells me a secret, my confident", I kind of relate this to my own natal moon placement (that being in the twelveth house). Because it's the emotions sort of hidden in the unconscious, and when I am depressed that is where I go, and that is where I find my solace, when my imagination is tapped by my loneliness and melancholy, and I can explore anything there. And then the next two lines are informing that these thoughts-these messages that end up coming through the imagination, communicating to you, and then through you, once expressed, don't actually come from you, but you're merely the mediator, and there is something much greater. I think that's really beautifully put there.

And, as a wannabe-writer, I love this line: "Just let the light touch you and let the words spill through" and so on...it's really all a beautiful explanation of this great heirarchy of creativity.

I just love this song and relate to it so much, because of my natural tendency towards melancholy, and the peace I find in it (comfortable sadness...could consume you so easily). Ironically of course, the song helps me be melancholy.

I have been pondering the one trick pony bit. Maybe it is like, little girls always want a pony, but their parents will get them all sorts of things to try to get their mind off this desire of there's to have a pony. It's basically saying, these things are not good enough, they try to be what they cannot. Those things have run out, those fake ponies.

The Dresden Dolls – Colorblind Lyrics 21 years ago
I think it describes a relationship I have. For me, "you only loved in red" describes lust. I loved this guy for all the things he was, in so many various ways. But he only lusted over me, of course since HE only saw in black and white it was all he knew about love. So, I loved in colors he could never see, and he never felt. And we came from two completely different worlds. And I still love him, as a brother and a friend. And know that he's not the one. That's how I relate to the song anyway.

I like the line, "and I loved you unprotected, but you only loved in red".

The Dresden Dolls – Sex Changes Lyrics 21 years ago
Yes, it plays on words quite a bit.

It's about the concequences of sex. It's about empty feelings and dependancy. It's about killing feelings.

"youll have to keep on feeding it tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow " -- I take this as both feeding an addiction and/or a baby.

"the doctors said that once you get a taste for it youll keep on cutting" -- this looks like a reference to cutting. It can be taken as so much more than just sex. But any addictions really.

There is really a lot in this song. But when it comes down to it, it's more about the music than an exact definition for the lyrics, right?

Well whatever sexuality, the Troubadors always used their "crushes" in their songs in the opposite sex as they were, just to keep the identity unknown, or to indicate that they were powerful, or...something. Of course, they sang about how they didn't want their objects of affection because they knew they'd only be disapointed if they got them (or they simply were not good enough). Actually, I see a sort of similarity. The fact that you want someone who is fake, rather than real. What is that? Why do we want to be who we are not to get those who are not real? I mean, to get someone who is honest, and themself.

Actually, I lie, I have no idea what this is about. But that's what makes it cool.

I can relate to this song, because I too suffer this sort of egocentrism.

A friend of mine would describe it as something of a "don't look at me/look at me" phenomenon.

I am curious about these three lines:

"all these things can't,
all these things don't...
let me go. "

And that's all I have to say about that.

Tool – Parabol Lyrics 21 years ago
Oh. my. god... I had honestly never thought about this song as sexually related. That's actually interesting when I think about it real hard. But I mean, I have to think about it really hard for sex to sound interesting... It doesnt' really make that much sense, it's all obscure in my head (the sex bit), but there has been a lot of spiritual/sex conjuction things in religion (at least christianity).

Anyway, when I first thought about this, I thought about buddhism, because that's the way I was raised to think, I guess (rather than about sex and hate for the church, yay for me).

"This one, this form I hold now " Assuming that reincarnation is real (which it totally is, by the way), this line would be describing the body the soul currently resides in. Why is it warm and familiar? Well, I suppose that will raise some questions. Perhaps the physical material has always been with your soul, not necesarily in the exact form, but enough that it should feel familiar. Or maybe being in a body is familiar because it isn't the first the soul has been in. And well, bodies are just warm fuzzily things to wear.

I get the sense of perhaps, a former insecurity in the body. Most of us probably live the first good chunk of our lives confused and uncomfortable with the body we have, thinking perhaps we don't belong to it, in this world this way...and alienation of sorts. But then, finding hope...

It's really like a moment of realization and recognition. And if you've ever felt wildly hopeful... it's a great feeling.

I think that, we don't remember what happened before this life, or at least barely (if we can feel this hope, we have to know something). It's talking about staying in this body, holding on to this life, no longer doubting it, we chose it and we are choosing to be here.

The body here, is a total comfort tool. It connects us to the earth, which is full of life. The body and the soul are interconnect, and one cannot be alone when this is the case.

It is possible of course that it's talking about the ethereal body (s'that what it's called?). And that would be familiar because we remember it from before having a physical body, but that is the connector between the physical body and the soul... This being the body that would make one feel eternal, and realize that pain is an illusion.

I totally agree with the last line. Pain is an illusion, and we can think the pain up, and we do. Ah, I love these lyrics so.

Ah, but so many meanings. It's possible that Maynard knows not all of what he sings, since according to Christians and probably other religions, music, art, poetry comes from god and not the individual.

Tool – The Grudge Lyrics 21 years ago
"Maybe I'll also mention the part where the ocean transmutates Ouranos' castrated grudge of a penis into Aphrodite (Roman Venus). "

Never knew that one!! Nice one Aphrodite. That's hot.

I notice a lot of people view most tool songs to be against the church. But from my personal standpoint, I just don't see it like that. Perhaps it's because I'm not an atheist. Perhaps if I gave a rats ass about the church I might see it. But I think these songs are slightly more spiritual than that.

Actually I tend to relate everything ever just back to the self, and often overlook certain historical and mythical references. But it's all metaphore anyway, so it's no matter whether I catch the things so long as it makes sense in the end.

I find this song, like most songs by this band, quite positive (maybe disguised as negative, however...) Or rather, it's a reminder, at least has a positive message, or a message to be positive... but I guess that's just obvious.

If I wanted I could interpret this song as being about a grudge against god.

*shrug* I just love all the thought behind it...and there is so much.

Matthew Good Band – I Miss New Wave Lyrics 21 years ago
"He wants something more raw, more left to chance, more real (miss new wave and real intents). "

Okay, that makes sense.

It's like life is such a load of bullshit, it's so phony, so overproduced, it's monotonous and sucky ... and if the song relates to a relationship, maybe that's what that it was like too. You're going to miss all those moments that were real.

Matthew Good Band – I Miss New Wave Lyrics 21 years ago
Okay, first of all, how is "poetry" a feminine word? Second of all, how is music masculine? Third of all wtf are you people on? Fourthly HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW WHAT NEW WAVE IS?

About the song, I like how it is put together.

"get laid in a lawn chair /drown in a bathtub "

and

"get laid at the rose bowl /drown in a hot tub"

I like it, it's kind of ironic.

I think this is a song about nostalgia. I personally miss things and times and places that made me feel quite melancholy, because there is something about them that is appealing.

"i miss new wave /and movies about losing /or just the parts where it's a-okay "

New Wave is generally music that does not deal with happy things. It deals with depression and angst.

"I'll miss new wave /and watching you walk away "

I guess it's just the tendency to find some kind of solace in the idea of sadness.

Or maybe the song is sarcastic.

Bah, I don't know, that was not very insightful.

A Perfect Circle – Thomas Lyrics 21 years ago
"show me the way to forgive you"

I like it. In our age many of us feel let down by something--the world most likely, often by god, by our parents, by society, by friends, you name it. Maybe we feel the things we do are a cause of this total discouragement and lack of caring or understanding. Pain is brought onto us through our own actions though, so how does one gain forgiveness for these actions, how does one forgive the world for making one be this way?

Well, it seems perhaps the first step to reconnecting to this aspect is to want to, to humble one's self and ask how. It's basically saying "I want to let it go (this hurt)" ... hoping is the first step, no?

Anyway, I think it's beautiful.
