Manic Street Preachers – Small Black Flowers That Grow In The Sky Lyrics 17 years ago
I remember reading that yes it was about zoo animals but also about Richey comparing this to how he felt trapped in his life. I can't quite remember if that was an official quote or a fan speculation but it fits either way.

The harvesting ovaries, I assumed was something that might have happened in a situation to confined animals that were trying to be forcibly bred?

Also 'warden, Christ, temple, elder' are all nouns for things that people either worship or are ruled by. If life in a zoo is being compared to being trapped as in a jail/prison in this song then warden is appropriate and the rest are things that people of other beliefs let rule over them, sometimes blindly.

Garbage – Bleed Like Me Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree that the lyrics are very simple. I've seen the topic of self harm done in songs a lot more articulately than this. However the fact that the lyrics are simple and the topic is a heavy one does make for an interesting feel.

Darren Hayes – Heart Attack Lyrics 21 years ago
I love this song. Just this total rage you get yourself into when you realize you've been betrayed by a close friend. Anyone who's had that happen can really get this.

Darren Hayes – Right Dead Back On It Lyrics 21 years ago
I didn't like this song at first but it's grown on me. This song is so corny but so funky and fun at the same time. Love hearing Darren interchange with female vocals on occasion, it fits him really well here.

Darren Hayes – Hero Lyrics 21 years ago
I agree. When you're famous people look up to you and some follow your every move, whether it be to mimic or to criticize it. It has to be terribly stressing at some points. And even though you may be very respectful of the position you hold in the fans lives every now and then you just want to tell people to go and find someone else to look up to because you can't take it anymore or feel you'll mess up.

Darren Hayes – Fallin' at Your Feet Lyrics 21 years ago
I love this. It's pretty self explanatory but all the same it's just a beautiful song. Being overwhelmed by a person, which is how the song feels to me when I listen to it.

Savage Garden – Gunning Down Romance Lyrics 21 years ago
I positively adore this song, it's definately in my top3 SG songs. It's dark and just different from so many of their other tunes but completely believable at the same time and they can pull the style off well. I wish they would have written more in this direction.

I don't think it's about one specific breakup/event in that sense. But it works incredibly well as just this overall feeling you get after thinking one too many times about the bad side of love, how it burns you. Eventually you get bitter and start to thinking what is love? You tear it down to the most basic unfeeling level which is that it's technically just 'chemical reactions in your brain'. He's begging love to come rescue him from these thoughts.

I'm gunning down romance
It never did a thing for me
But heartache and misery
Ain't nothing but a tragedy

This song gives me the shivers. I know what it's like to feel like this. Amazing stuff.

And yeah Darren was married to a woman named Colby for a period of time. They were college sweethearts I believe?

Savage Garden – I Don't Know You Anymore Lyrics 21 years ago
I completely agree with Savagedstar. I think a lot of Darrens songs ended up being about that topic as well.

This isn't a SG song.

Savage Garden – To The Moon And Back Lyrics 21 years ago
This was inspired by a mutual relationship both the guys had with someone (might have been a guy actually but I think they changed it for the song?) who was hurt by the divorce of their parents ("Mamma never loved her much, daddy never keeps in touch"). One of my top SG favourite songs either way. It's gorgeous, and different from most pop singles.

Savage Garden – I Want You Lyrics 21 years ago
I read this was apparently about a dream Darren had.

Savage Garden – Memories Are Designed To Fade Lyrics 21 years ago
I can't believe no one's commented here yet, this is a great song. One of my favourite b-sides.

The singer is infatuated with a guy/girl but they're caught in their memories of this other woman and won't commit to him perhaps.

Savage Garden – Carry On Dancing Lyrics 21 years ago
Yeah it's presumably inspired by Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles in general. Very moody, I love it :)

Savage Garden – Mine Lyrics 21 years ago
I think I remember a quote where Darren said that this song was partially inspired by the movie Dangerous Liasons?

Either way I adore it. Just a terribly intense song about the pain of unrequited love.

Jack Off Jill – Author Unknown Lyrics 21 years ago
I like the religion-based idea of this song. It's quite possibly about Marilyn Manson, but that's the great thing about lyrics, they can mean different things to different people.

Either way I like the idea that this could be a fuck you to those who try to push their religious values on others. 'Create your history' being that different people take their religious texts most literal than others do, so in that sense you sort of get to pick and choose your own values and what you think others should also follow. And the whole 'there's no price tag on my conscience' line I love. Whether it's churches telling you to donate money to them or the fact of buying a religious book in general, there's no price tag on your morals/values.

This is a totally hot song.

Darren Hayes – Void Lyrics 21 years ago
Pretty much self explanatory. He's been with so many people but no one can take the place of/fill the void that was left by one particular person.

Darren Hayes – Where You Want To Be Lyrics 21 years ago
Just a classic idea of two very close people going their separate ways and the terrible regret that comes with it. First everything that happens you sort of blame on or attribute to the other person ("Are you where you want to be") and then after thinking everything through you realize that you had just as much a hand in how things ended up ("Am I where I wanted to be") etc.

The Goo Goo Dolls – What A Scene Lyrics 21 years ago
Probably describes a lot of peoples teenage years when you really didn't think for yourself. Basically wanting to be what the media pumps into your brain as being 'cool'. And the whole "how does it feel when you're out on your own..." is just being stubborn, wanting that freedom because it's cool to be indepentant of parents and such, but it's completely irrational as you have no means to make it by yourself. So relax and make the best of things.

This song is so simple, but so damn great. Very bluntly put. Up yours. I like it.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Stop The World Lyrics 21 years ago
I love this song, one of my favourites by the Goo's.

You feel you love someone so much you'd do anything for them, stop the world in this case and stop all of the things that are hurting them. But in the long run you know it really won't solve anything or help. The person in question just complains too much and you're fed up with trying to 'stop the world' just to please them. They just have to learn to deal with the shit that comes their way.

The Goo Goo Dolls – All Eyes On Me Lyrics 21 years ago
A friend perhaps being left behind. ("But your eyes look awa y" // "All that you knew slips away") They're watching what's becoming of this other person who they used to know, watching their morals and behaviours change for what seems like the worse ("everything you're chasing, it seems to leave you empty") and you can't do anything about it even though you don't agree with what they've become ("I lie and have to laugh"). Overall, if you've ever had a close friend that changed to become someone completely different. Great song.
