Toll no bell for me father
But let this cup of suffering pass from me
Send me no shepherd to heal my world
But the angel, the dream foretold
Prayed more than thrice for you to see
The wolf of loneliness in me
Not my own will but yours be done

You, wake up, where's the tomb?
Will easter come, enter my room?
The lord weeps with me
But my tears fall for you

Another beauty
Loved by a beast
Another tale of infinite dreams
Your eyes, they were my paradise
Your smile made my sun rise

Forgive me for I don't know what I gain
Alone in this garden of pain
Enchantment has but one truth
I weep to have what I fear to lose

You, wake up, where's the tomb?
Will easter come, enter my room?
The lord weeps with me
But my tears fall for you

I knew you never before
I see you never more
But the love, the pain, the hope, oh, beautiful one
Have made you mine 'till all my years are done

Without you (without you)
The poetry within me is dead

This is one of my favorite Nightwish songs. It combines a biblical story of suffering with a story of love. Tuomas has said in an interview that the lyrics are from him to a certain woman and that she knows what it is. In the Thank You's on the album he mentions "The Haunting Beauty of Gethsemane Garden" and later in Dead Boy's Poem he says "Died for the beauty/The one in the garden".

This song is his way of telling the woman how he feels about her. Honestly, the line "Without you, the poetry within me is dead" almost makes me cry when I'm in the right mood.

The song is brilliantly put together and deserves much more recognition.

Hell, the band does too for that matter!

It's about love... It's about someone in deep love for someone else, but he thinks that it could be a mistake or a sin....

I absolutely LOVE this song... it embodies so well the emotions that love conveys, including those that make us suffer or doubt ourselves.... that which makes us go on, eventhough that love may never be reciprocated.

Jesus in Gethsemane is an supremely powerful image - that of a man who knows he is going to die praying, crying to be saved. In the story he is alone as the others sleep, so it is about being alone and torturing yourself. This is unrequited love her... but adds that his ambition will forever be his by virtue of her being the cause of so much pain.

ah geez, will people stop believing that nightwish plays gospel rock???? yes there are references to the bible, the same way poets like Blake used biblical references in their poetry There are also references to greek and egyptian myth, and with this i reaffirm my stand that tuomas is a poetic lyricist its very typical of poets to make references to ancient mythology and the bible and take your knowledge of these for granted in order to express what they actually want to

My first boyfriend bought me Oceanborn for my birthday and I fell in love with this song. 'Your eyes they were my paradise, your smile made my sun rise' has got to be my favourite part.

Gethsemane was the garden in which Jesus suffered. The references to Easter quite anchor the fact that this song is about Jesus Christ.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
