I first heard this song on Launch. At first I was like "Oh God...Nightwish..." then I listened to the whole thing, and was blown away. I went out and bought the CD the following paycheck.

Thiis song is about freedom from the bounds of sexual restrictions that our christian society forces to us. The very idea of "innocennce", all this old lies will burn like angel's wings.

P.S. To understand metal lyrics you must have a broad view of things and the capacity to see deeper. If it is tired for your mind to think and you can't understand the "stupid" lyrics of metal there are many "artists" around that have plain and simple lyrics about trendy issues that need no brain at all.

This song has nothing to do with sexual freedom or any 'blah blah'. This is a clear diss song directed to Tarja's husband(I'm not gonna call this idiot by the name) who in his long time paranoia decided to accuse Tuomas of being in love with her for no good reason. This fits perfectly with the husband's recent repeat of the accusation in 2021 which can be seen here: youtube.com/watch

where among the husband's arguments he mentions Tarja's name in the forum back then being 'Angel'. It's not a coincidence that in the song title "Wish I had an Angel" the word angel is in capital letters, indicating a proper name instead of a noun.

"I wish I had an angel for a moment of love, I wish I had YOUR angel tonight" Already in the 1st verse Tuomas strikes back, feeding the dude's paranoia. Then he proceeds:

"Deep into a dying day I took a step outside an innocent heart" Meaning he was invited by her husband to a dinner and went there with an innocent heart, he didn't expect this to be a set up as he considered him a good friend. Naturally, knowing Tarja for years, a friend of Tarja is a friend of his too right?

"Prepare to hate me fall when I may This night will hurt you like never before" Tuomas is saying he is getting back at him in this song for the husband's sneaky rat attitude.

"Old loves they die hard Old lies they die harder" Basically saying: this narcissist woman is not over me, so she is putting ideas inside her new husband's mind, so this clueless idiot will pick a fight with me. Tuomas didn't know that by doing this, she would have a good excuse to leave the band.

"I wish I had your angel Your Virgin Mary undone" Clearly, the husband is just a puppet, so he sees Tarja as a virgin Mary, but Tuomas knows her longer than him and knows her tricks. Many women marry a mule, someone to take care of stuff for her as an exchange for filling this simp's teenage dream of having someone as "awesome" as her for a wife

"I'm in love with my lust Burning angel wings to dust" As I said before, Angel was her nickname, so Tuomas is saying here that this accusation lighted up in him a desire(lust) to expose both of these phonies, specially her(burning her wings to dust) and at the same time saying he miss having sex with her and would like to have her for one night just to piss this cuck of a husband off.

"I'm going down so frail 'n cruel Drunken disguise changes all the rules" Obviously, in this dinner they started drinking and when people drink they get stupid. So here Tuomas is saying that alcohol makes us say things or exposing feelings we were hiding before.

"Greatest thrill Not to kill But to have the prize of the night" Again, Tuomas feeds the husband's paranoia by basically saying if she is doing that is because she still have feelings for him, so he(Tuomas) will end up with the prize and that's the best revenge.

"Hypocrite Wannabe friend 13th disciple who betrayed me for nothing!" Basically saying he wasn't even in love with her(so he betrayed Tuomas trust for nothing), he thought they were good friends until this snake started with the stupid accusation.

"Last dance, first kiss" He kissed Tarja first but he will have this last "dance", since clearly things weren't exactly over.

"Your touch my bliss" Basically saying 'whatever I don't care', Tuomas gives them the bless. He got with her before anyway, what does he care now?
