Thou shalt not
Kill your fathers, destroy another life
Question everything we clung to for years
Live forever, design a better death
Confuse a liar with a savior from fear
Create a myth and separate the chosen ones
Adolescent independence, dominion
I only wanna believe in fuckin' anything
But now my conscience is contradicting everything

The ending's the same, the world will not change
The answer is clear

Tell your mothers they have no sons or daughters
Blame yourselves because your children are mine
We are orphans, but we are not forgotten
And we will find a way to save us this time
We can run, but we are tired of running
We're dropping seconds in a glass till we die
We only wanna believe in fuckin' everything
But we're alive and we're not accepting anything

The ending's the same, the world will not change
The answer is clear? annihilation

I won't control or restrain things I do not understand
Now I realize I'm stronger then I was
They gave to me now I give to you the means to burn the thoughts I had
Now I realize I'm stronger better more

We have to save ourselves
We have to save ourselves
We have to save ourselves
We have to save ourselves
We have to save ourselves
We have to save ourselves

I will never become another piece
Inside the paralytic construct I hate
Live forever? well, I would rather die
At least I'd know I wasn't theirs to create
This is yours, but you had better choose
Before they take away your right to decide
I guess I'll never believe in fuckin' anything
But my solace is I can handle everything

The ending's the same, the world will not change
The answer is clear, obliteration

I won't control or restrain things I do not understand
Now I realize I'm stronger then I
They gave to me now I give to you the means to burn the thoughts I had
Now I realize I'm stronger better

I won't control or restrain things I do not understand
Now I realize I'm stronger then I
They gave to me now I give to you the means to burn the thoughts I had
Now I realize I'm stronger better more

We have to save ourselves
We have to save ourselves
We have to save ourselves
We have to save ourselves
We have to save ourselves
We have to save ourselves

    Song Meaning

    lecturing mode - on

I think the song is about religion and not goverments, really. And not only the wars that are being waged in the name of a God, but also the indoctrination and narrow-mindedness of the religious people themselves.

The "thou shalt not" at the beginning of the song could be a reference to the 10 commandments from God, as most of them start with "thou shalt not" or any other version of those words. This interpretation is backed up by the lines that follow: "Kill your father, destroy another life". The 10 commandments tell us to "honor thy father" and "not kill", so yeah, this makes some sense. Corey adds some more commandments after these, though. "Question everything we clung to for years", "Design a Better Death". I think he comments on the religious peoples mindless clinging onto their old rules and habits. They are not open for influences from the outside. At the end of this couplet he claims he is actually open for religion, but finds himself incapable of believing because he sees there is so much wrong with religion. This is followed by the line he keeps repeating: The end is the same, the world will not change. The answer is clear: etc, etc, etc. The world sucks and, according to Corey, religion is not open for any new influences, thus preventing this sucking world from changing. According to him, the answer is destroying religion.

The rest of the song easier to explain. I think it pretty much comes down to Corey telling the listeners to turn against their (religious) parents and think for themselves rather than simply take everything they are told as the truth. He says he is not trying to "control or restrain something he does not understand" (?deity?), but realises he is better off doing so (openly being an Atheïst, I guess). He was told by someone how to cast religion aside (burn the thoughts he had) and he is trying to tell us to do the same. If we want to be free of religion and the war and doubt it breeds, we will have to free ourselves from its shackles.

I might be right, I might be wrong. Nonetheless, a lovely songtext with tons of meaning in it! Its message might be a bit extreme, but I guess it's all part of their image.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
