I see nothing in your eyes
And the more I see the less I like
Is it over yet
In my head

I know nothing of your kind
And I won't reveal your evil mind
Is it over yet
I can't wait

So sacrifice yourself
And let me have whats left
I know that I can find
The fire in your eyes

I'm going all the way
Get away
You take the breath right out of me
You left a hole where my heart should be

You gotta fight just to make it through
'Cause I'll be the death of you
This will be all over soon
Pour salt into the open wound

Is it over yet
Let me in

So sacrifice yourself
And let me have whats left
I know that I can find
The fire in your eyes

I'm going all the way
Get away
You take the breath right out of me
You left a hole where my heart should be

You gotta fight just to make it through
'Cause I'll be the death of you

I'm waiting
I'm hating
Realize
Start hiding

You take the breath right out of me
You left a hole where my heart should be

You gotta fight just to make it through
'Cause I'll be the death of you

    My Interpretation

I'm very late to this discussion but I'm thinking this song is about a woman in an unhappy marriage and he is/was her lover…and she chose the marriage over him. It’s heading for divorce but not quite there yet….and she’s stopped their relationship...maybe w/promises it will resume after the divorce.

I see nothing in your eyes, And the more I see the less I like //her marriage is making her unhappy and draining the life out of her, and he’s not happy about it.

Is it over yet? In my head? //he’s asking if it’s over yet, because in his head he dreams of it being over and they can be together, but maybe it's just all in his head.

I know nothing of your kind, And I won't reveal your evil mind //he doesn’t understand about married people/married women, and how they would fight to save a marriage (stay in a bad marriage) when it’s obviously unhappy and emotionally killing her. Evil mind because she had an affair w/him(which only they 2 know about) and evil because she loves him but still chose to stay in the marriage, even tho she's in love w/him.

Is it over yet? I can't win! //is it over yet? (you are still with him even tho it is making you unhappy. You love me, I make you happy. I can’t win!)

So sacrifice yourself And let me have what's left //sacrifice yourself — give up on your happily ever after dreams; get a divorce. //you may not be a whole person in your eyes anymore, but I’ll take what’s left of you

I know that I can find A fire in your eyes //he believes he can make her happy and full of life

I'm going all the way Get away, please! //I won’t give up on you… leave the bad marriage, please!

You take the breath right out of me //he loves her...desperately

You left a hole where my heart should be //she broke his heart because he fell in love w/her during their affair but she has ended it w/him and still is choosing her husband/marriage

You've gotta fight just to make it through //she has to struggle each day dealing w/the bad marriage, and being in love w/someone else. 'Cause I will be the death of you // her thinking of him (because she loves him too) will make her even more unhappy and slowly kill her emotionally

This will be all over soon, Pour the salt into the open wound //he's giving her advice...it will be over if...you end the marriage. he's telling her to cleans the infection...rip the band aid off; salt is an old remedy for cleaning a wound to keep it from getting infected…but it hurt like hell. So basically,he's saying...it will hurt like hell but it could be over if you just face it and end it.

Is it over yet? //Again, he’s asking if it’s over (he just gave her more advice to end it — over now?) Let me in! //He’s getting impatient waiting for her…he wants in her life/heart NOW!

    So sacrifice yourself
And let me have what's left I know that I can find A fire in your eyes I'm going all the way Get away, please! //repeat — give up the marriage, I will take you as you are, pain and all. I can make you happy, get out of the marriage, please

You take the breath right out of me You left a hole where my heart should be You've gotta fight just to make it through 'Cause I will be the death of you

    (take take take)

I'm waiting //he’s waiting for her I'm praying //he’s praying she acts Realize //wake up — understand that the marriage won’t work - it needs ended Start hating! //telling her to start hating the marriage/husband b/c hate is a great motivator

You take the breath right out of me You left a hole where my heart should be You've gotta fight just to make it through 'Cause I will be the death of you

Standing On The Edge Of Summer

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
