Controlled dose of tranquility
Forgetfulness washes over me
Put to rest the voices of insanity
Only the cinders remain
As another night
Becomes a yesterday
Come on! Anesthetize the panic
It is what drives the weak
You're gone! Anesthetize the panic
Putting all uncertainties to sleep
Not an altered state of mind
But a safer place in an unsafe world
Within the nearness of death
Rapture in the skip of a heartbeat
Controlled dose of tranquility
Forgetfulness washes over me
Put to rest the voices of insanity
Only the cinders remain
As another night
Becomes a yesterday
Come on! Anesthetize the panic
It is what drives the weak
You're gone! Anesthetize the panic
Putting all uncertainties to sleep
Not an altered state of mind
But a safer place in an unsafe world
Within the nearness of death
Rapture in the skip of a heartbeat

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

“Head > Heels” is a track that aims to capture what it feels like to experience romance that exceeds expectations. Ed Sheeran dedicates his album outro to a lover who has blessed him with a unique experience that he seeks to describe through the song’s nuanced lyrics.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
shadows fall might be the start of the new music movement. hopefully, cause our generation got ripped off
The whole song to me seems like it is talk about mind altering substances . . . whether alcohol, medication, other illegal drugs . . . whatever. And it seems like brian is talking about how so many people rely on it to get through life because they are weak and the world seems scary and unsafe. Rock on whiskey wagon!!!!
Seems to me it's about people who get anxiety attacks. All the days that pass just seem to become a blur and you can't remember anything from the day before. And once the panic is over there's that relaxed state of mind that lasts for about 10 mninutes.
Seems to be about anti-depressants.
RITALIN
but seriously folks it sounds like a heavier version of vitamin r with monster riffs not tryin to put it down >
great song!!! and i also think its about taking meds for mental health concerns
@suburbangraffiti;
It's called "new wave of american heavy metal" which i dont like, cause there are also bands from europe that are included...
This is probably my favorite SF song... but all songs are great so its hard to say sometimes...
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that this song is about getting drunk and fucked up or something, nonetheless its definitely about alcohol, anti-depressents and all that,
i agree with suburbangraffiti
I love this song - my favourite on WW. I don't know why, but Shadows Fall seems to stand out from all the other generic metalcore bands for me.
Anyway, this song could be about any form of anti-depressant. Kinda cruel to call them "Weak", though.
