The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. All of HIM's songs follow a very simple formular:
1) take some crappy 80's depeche mode sounding beat.
2) Add a bunch of meaningless lyrics about being in love and dying and shit.
3) Add the words "my love" and "my darling", sporadically.
4) Sing it in a voice that sounds like your dog has just died.
5) Finally give it a name like "In Love and Death" or "Hearts in Rapture.
And there you have it, it takes no skill at all, just 5 simple steps and you will have a bunch of little black-clad freaks crying into their heart-o-gram t-shirts.
While I don't like the guy, I do however have to give props to Valo for the excellent job he is doing at cornering the market. Who knew that no talent and a bunch of 14 year olds wanting to suck your dick could become so profitable.
