In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Caught up in the middle
Had no choice, had no choice
Birthright forgotten, so silent
No voice
I see you
You know who
Little girl, little girl
Now realize little girl
Overlooked little girl
Bottled up and empty holding back
At loss you're forgotten
Getting back, get back
Expectations of another
Love given to the younger
Broken father, broken brother
Emptiness feeds the hunger
I see you
You know who
Little sister, little sister
Now realize little sister
Overlooked little girl
Change, change, change
Had no choice, had no choice
Birthright forgotten, so silent
No voice
I see you
You know who
Little girl, little girl
Now realize little girl
Overlooked little girl
Bottled up and empty holding back
At loss you're forgotten
Getting back, get back
Expectations of another
Love given to the younger
Broken father, broken brother
Emptiness feeds the hunger
I see you
You know who
Little sister, little sister
Now realize little sister
Overlooked little girl
Change, change, change

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
Blue
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
i think this song is about a divorce and how it's seen through the eys of a child
i think this song is about his dog...
lol just kidding!
honestly i dont know the meaning, unless its very literal, and all hes trying to say is what he says. so im really curious what other people may think about it. i think they're other songs are definitely more fun to pick apart and stuff, but thats okay. CREED rocks.
This is kind of hard to understand. I think we can surely tell it has something to do with family problems because of the line 'Broken father, broken brother' It must have something to do with a struggle in a family with the line 'Caught up in the middle had no choice had no choice' as 'no choice' is repeated. I don't know for sure. Like the song :-)
I think it is Scott thinking about how his sister felt while all of his problems were occuring around her. Scott had a lot of problems with his parents and was getting into a lot of things that he wasn't raised to do. I think he wrote this song because he was wondering how his sister felt during all the "chaos"
Wow... This has been my 2nd favorite on MOP for the longest time and I had no idea what it was about but it seems like you've all nailed it. Thanks. I gotta go listen to it now.
first of all, creed kicks ass and this song rocks. i think it's about how when scott stapp was having family problems he started to realize that his sister was put in an awkward position, and thus he wrote this song from her perspective. my personal fave on their first cd.
i think this song is about being a middle child. Expections of another love give to another. there to busy with the older and younger syblings.
Yeah I totally agree hardrockrulz
First of all i think that the album MY OWN PRISON is fuckin amazing and the best Creed song.
Now i think most songs from the album well it is based around trust and not commiting yourself to anything or youll end up jailed in it for life like a PRISON This song i think is about family related i think its from the perspective of Scott Stapp examining his sisters trouble? but what trouble it could be anything divorce, drug related, some sort of dispute, pregnancy etc
I agree that this song is about an "overlooked" middle child (a girl). "Little sister" is Scott's younger sister. "Love given to the younger" means younger than her: the third child, the youngest of the three, who also received more attention, just like Scott, the oldest.
She is "bottled up" and "holding back" because she has no outlet to express herself.
"Broken father, broken brother," says she had no strong or constant parent in her father, and no steady older sibling in her brother. A girl in this situation often turns to relationships with other boys/ men outside the family to fill the gap. "Emptiness feeds the hunger" feeds her desire to find a man outside of the family because she had no good male role model, with her brother being into drugs and her father being ineffectual.
Creed is always showing compassion for weak and overlooked people. Look at the next song on the album "What's this life for?". THis is definitely about weak and broken people who live with demons that haunt them.
