Some further insight into the song

http://blog.mtvmusic.com/2010/02/22/mtv-music-book-club-jared-leto-of-30-seconds-to-mars-talks-finn/

Jared Leto, actor and frontman for rock band 30 Seconds to Mars, professes to be a big reader. The musician, whose third album This Is War came out in December, often draws lyrical inspiration from books–not surprising as Leto has previously stated that This Is War is a concept album. Leto initially intended to recommend Whatever You Think, Think The Opposite, a non-fictional advice book by Paul Arden, but instead chose Jon Clinch’s 2007 novel Finn, a re-telling of the classic Huckleberry Finn story. The dark, pensive book, which focuses on the human capacity for evil, influenced Leto’s songwriting on This Is War. Here, he explains how and offers some brief thoughts on the connection between music and literature.

Has this book influenced your music?
While I was working on This Is War, there was a folklore-ish element to some of the lyrics, specifically a song called “Night of the Hunter” — songs that delved into the American Gothic.

Who should read this book?
Anyone who's interested in a unique and imaginative journey into the birth of a nation, clash of culture and the imaginings inspired from one of the most classic American novels of all time.

Thanks.
I'm not too sure what he's referring to. When I hear "a million little pieces" it reminds me of the fake memoir by James Frey. I haven't read the book but its about batteling drug addiction and his life falling into a million little pieces and overcoming this. So the song and book seem to have similar themes but I'm really not sure if Jared would write a song about that book. Perhaps its saying that these inner demons/problems stole life from him? He broke into a million little pieces and he's saying "let go" to whatever caused his life to shatter?

30 Seconds to Mars – Vox Populi (A Call To Arms) Lyrics 14 years ago
"Vox populi" means "voice of the people" and the song falls in line with the rest of the album as far as its theme/meaning. "The people" are starting a war, rising up in arms against society and the status quo and the restricting forces of our culture.

"Search and Destroy" is a military tactic of quickly searching out the enemy, destroying them and withdrawing quickly after this is accomplished. I think this is about searching and destroying one's inner daemons and short comings.

30 Seconds to Mars – Night of the Hunter Lyrics 14 years ago
I think its supposed to be "La Nuit du chasseur" which is the French title of the movie "The Night of the Hunter" The movie is about a man who steals money and is sentenced to death for it and his cell mate tries to get him to reveal the location but he won't and only tells his son the location which leads the cell mate to marry his widow after his execution in an attempt to get close to his kids and find out the location of the money. The kids eventually escape with the money and he "hunts" them. I think this song tells a tale of being born of a society/people that are like the thief in the movie, but you can rise above it and escape and to not be afraid of the night and the hunt because society/people will try to destroy you (like the cell mate) and hunt you. And the line "Honest to God, I'll break your heart
Tear you to pieces and rip you apart" seems to be a statement made my the world/society. You will be broken, your heart will be ripped apart by this world but you can rise above it. This line reminds me a lot of The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi by The Receiving End of Sirens (AMAZING concept album) especially their songs "Swallow People Whole" and "Stay Small"

30 Seconds to Mars – This Is War Lyrics 14 years ago
The first things that struck me about this song when I listened to it was then repeated phrase "Brave New World" which of course made me think of the Aldous Huxley novel. "Brave New World" in the book referred to a new society which was highly artificial, blinded and obsessed with consuming and hedonistic pleasures and there was a constant battle between truth (and reality) and what people believed (or were made to believe via government control and mood altering drugs). This society worshiped Henry Ford, the inventor of mass production and the assembly line (and that's why they worshiped him). I think Jared is saying "Its a Brave New World" stating that society has arrived at a point similar to that of the fictional society in the book and that "This is War" because we are fighting back to reclaim a better society which is more truthful and not based on artifical, selfish, meaningless things, hence the song it leads into (100 Suns). Since he states "I do believe in the light, raise your hands up to the sky The fight is done, war is won, lift your hands toward the sun
toward the sun, toward the sun, the war is won" right before the lead into "100 Suns" makes me think that he's saying we'll win the battle against a fake, meaningless society by its very destruction (reference the "100 Suns till we part" line and its interpretation).

30 Seconds to Mars – Kings And Queens Lyrics 14 years ago
I think that several of the interpretations already given were correct. The song is about society and how we are destroying ourselves (the age of man is over). We were the rulers (Kings and Queens) of a "promise" (something more, something better) yet we were corrupted and resorted to war, bloodshed and violence to obtain what we worshiped (hence the children of a lesser god line- money, sex, etc like previously mentioned). We will destroy all we have and only then will we realize and we will begin to understand things as they are (the lessons that we learned here have only just begun). We are "phantoms of ourselves" between "heaven and hell"- we are not living up to our potential he says.

30 Seconds to Mars – 100 Suns Lyrics 14 years ago
100 Suns is the title of a book which shows 100 photos of nuclear bombs and was inspired by a quote stating that a detonating nuclear bomb is like the glowing of a thousand suns. I think the song says he doesn't believe in the concepts and creations of humanity/society and that all of this will just be destroyed by ourselves anyways (100 suns until we part). He believes only in those things that weren't artificially created by society(the beating of our hearts, the truth of who we are).

30 Seconds to Mars – Stranger In a Strange Land Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the title either refers to the book Stranger In A Strange Land or to the Book of Exodus (from which the sci fi book took its title).I don't take the song to be literally about God or Jesus, but that those are analogies. I think the song speaks of salvation and finding "righteousness" so to speak and the extremes of goodness and evil which people are capable of. The whole album has a disapproving tone of society and humanity and how we choose to conduct ourselves and destroy ourselves from the inside out. "I'm guilty of treason" probably speaks of giving into society's values and our general way of life and betraying what we know to be a better way. It also seems to be a song of death, "Angel or demon, it came for my soul" has almost an apocalyptic sound to it, stating that something is coming for us and saying "gonna live forever tonight" The song states to get on your knees if youre looking for Jesus, which probably is an analogy for "repenting" and changing our (society's) ways to live in a better fashion. Also, in the book of the same title, the main character was raised on Mars (nice reference to their name) and doesn't understand "human" things such as war and jealousy (although he himself is human but was just raised by Martians). He was "a stranger in a strange land" once he was returned to earth and hoped to change humanity into more of a Martian type society and only understood the concept of God as a being that was understood by being part of it and a unit of oneness amongst creation. The song could be alluding to the book in that sense as well.

The right/left hand reference is from Isiah 9:20. "One will devour on the right hand, and be hungry; and he will eat on the left hand, and they will not be satisfied. Everyone will eat the flesh of his own arm"

Also, I've been reading the Screwtape Letters by C.S Lewis. Towards the end of the book, there are lines which resemble lines from this song, which would make sense considering the fact that Oubliette was heavily inspired by lines from Chapter 12.

I asked Casey if it was true that this song was written about masturbation and this is what he had to say

Hey,

That is half true. Brendan and I wrote those lyrics together, and while I was writing them from the perspective of empty sex, he was a virgin at the time we wrote the song, so he was writing it from the perspective of masturbation... I think its about all things fornication. It stretches beyond simple sex and masturbation- and into the isolation, embarrassment, resentment, and regret that can be negative side effects of said events.

Well, replace the word "World" in my interpretation with the word "Music" and its still dead on, The meaning is still the same, just a lot more focused on a single subject and experience. And my pseudo-intellectual brain? Right. You don't even know me so to assume that I'm a pseudo intellectual who is as shallow as a puddle is rather sad. I hope you don't judge all strangers that harshly.

Perhaps its not from the character's perspective at the beginning of the song and it's like the earth is speaking to him, telling him that she will only bring him pain and then he comes to realize that all colors fade, etc and he "disappears" so to speak and he gets lost in the vast sorrow of life while he hears the ringing of the spheres (Mi Fa Mi or Misery, Famine, Misery)

The Receiving End Of Sirens – Pale Blue Dot Lyrics 16 years ago
And to better illustrate the pale blue dot concept, here's an excerpt from the book. This can be found right at the beginning of the book in chapter one, there's more to it but I don't feel like typing it all out and this is the only excerpt I found online.

We succeeded in taking that picture [from deep space], and, if you look at it, you see a dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you know, everyone you love, everyone you've ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of all our joys and sufferings, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines. Every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species, lived there - on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of the dot on scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner of the dot. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light.

Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity -- in all this vastness -- there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. It is up to us. It's been said that astronomy is a humbling, and I might add, a character-building experience. To my mind, there is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish this pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."

The Receiving End Of Sirens – Pale Blue Dot Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the whole album follows a theme, it is very much a conceptual album and this is almost coming to terms with the rest of the events in the 11 songs that precede it.
Pale Blue Dot refers to earth, as Wozz had mentioned the Voyager photograph. It's one of the most famous photographs ever taken and surly one of the most recongizable and the book of the same title is simply amazing.
"The shameful seeds I've sown
I watched its stems sprawl above me
Its dark shadow cast its cloud around me
But I can live with it
I'll live in it"

We've made this planet what it is, and sometimes it hasn't always been good but when all is said and all is done, there is no place like home.

"Heavied, we're so heavy
If she only knew just how sorry I was
(Heavied, we're so heavy)
If she only knows..."

I think this is an apology to the planet, for all we've put her through.

"I can live with it
If I can learn to live with this
If I can learn to live "

He can live with the guilt if he can learn to live with it but only if he first learns how to live.

The Receiving End Of Sirens – Smoke and Mirrors Lyrics 16 years ago
The song speaks of the lurid hold that the world has over us, or at least tries to obtain. The wolves wear our wool. The heartless winners of this dog eat dog world dominate us and wear our own locks. They may have control of your life, of your look, but your voice they can't take. The spoils of this world are tempting, becasue they hide their "fangs" well. In the end we are disposable. We are the oil that feeds the industry yet the industry defines us and neither the industry could be without us as their cheap thrill or could we be without the indsutry that gives us a "product to push". We are their sitting ducks, their easy target, they try to shoot us down for their own gain. It's almost like an elicit love affair with someone you know to be horrible, yet the image they present is so enticing that you may get caught up in it but then you proclaim that you won't be led astray.

It reminds me of that thought of imagening the amount of suffering and depravity that it takes to build up one person like Rockefeller. And the blindness and deception that it takes to capture people in a state that could only be described as Orwellian and of 1984 in nature.

"I'm not your whore
And I won't be your Babylon" I'm still trying to figure this one out. Babylon, as most of you know was the capital or holy city of Babylonia and most of modern civilization sprung from that region. It is currently located in modern-day Iraq. Perhaps this is an anti-war reference? The war is about greed, the people behind it not only have blood on their hands but they have greasy palms drenched in oil.
But it may also be a religious refernce tothe tower of Babylon? They are not the industries whores and will not gather in zeal like the people of Babylon to erect some sort of misguided tower of Babylon?

30 Seconds to Mars – Buddha For Mary Lyrics 17 years ago
I have to agree that this song is about religion. I don't think it's about a person but rather the institution of religion and it's metamorphesis.

"Mary was a different girl
Had a thing for astronauts
Mary was the type of girl
She always liked to fall apart
Mary was a holy girl
Father whet her appetite
Mary was the type of girl
She always liked to fuck about"

I think this part describes the nature of Christianity in a way. Mary- Christianity- was a different girl- religion- and she hada thing for astronauts- dreamers and those aiming for something above and in outer space. Yet she liked to fall apart, wreak havoc, flakey actions and whimsy defined her. Father -god- whet her appetite, yet she liked to "fuck about" and venture into different areas completely off topic to what was really supposed to concern her.

"Tell me did you see her face?
Tell me did you smell her taste?
Tell me what's the difference,
Don't they all just look the same inside?

Buddha for Mary, here it comes!"

This is just asking if you've felt it, seen it, experienced it and then thought that it was all always the same crap, different presentation and then he proclaims "Budda for Mary here it comes". One religion to replace another.

"Mary was an acrobat
But still she couldn't seem to breathe
Mary was becoming
Everything she didn't want to be
Mary would hallucinate
And see the sky upon the wall
Mary was the type of girl
She always liked to fly"

Mary -christianity- was an acrobat and could shift shapes and twist and turn in every direction yet it never got the chance to breathe and slowly Christianity turned into something which it was not meant to be. Mary- christianity- would hallucinate and lie to itself and abd "see the sky upon the wall". It was confined, blocked in, caged, yet it saw false freedom and skies above. Christianty liked to fly, but within it's walls it remained.

"He said
Can you hear me are you sleeping
She said
Will you rape me now
He said
Leave the politics to madmen
She said
I believe your lies
He said
There's a paradise beneath me
She said
Am I supposed to bleed
He said
You better pray to jesus
She said
I don't believe in god"

This part is just about the downfall of Christianity in my opinions. It's about the temptation and Christianity's fall from grace. The "evil" or whatnot spoke and Christinity listened and started believing the lies and got caught up with politics and once again, went off topic into territory it had no business in and Christinity lost all of which defined it and stopped believing in Jesus so to speak.

The song, in my opinion, is about a girl ending a relationship and the guy knowing that it's a mistake but he's telling her that he won't take her back no matter how much she later regrets her decison. Basically, she screwed up and there is nothing that she could do at that point to fix what's been broken.

To me this song is almost like the prequel to "Planning a Prison Break". It's about looking back at your life and all of the things that have been exposed and made concrete by pictures, memories, stories, etc and how the darker things, the things that inspire paranoia are never caught on polaroids. They are hidden in the dark room and they vibrate with the frequency of what you truly are and one day this may catch up to you and you realize you are not who you wanted to be or though you were. It's at this point that I think a person would choose to plan a prison break from their own body and rid themselves of that which they no longer want to be and of their own toxic nature.

I think this is about two people who are in a relationship and they are rather miserable. They both need attention and something which they are not getting from one another and just take cheap shots at each other. Both feel unfillfilled and as though the other doesn't care. With each "dream" (times that are better, hopes of change, fleeting moments of contentment, etc) they want to scream but neither dare to "breath" and do what needs to be done. Instead it continues in a vicious cycle. They stay together in a bad relationship and she stays his muse and he her tragic lover.

I think this song is about wanting forgiveness from someone but that someone isn't even allowing them a chance to speak but instead is essentially just giving them more and more sh//t for whatever it is that happened. The song speaks of countless times when the person at the receiving end of the wrong doing was forigven and things were forgotten and there is so much water under the bridge that they're almost drowning in it and now that it's the other person's turn to forgive and forget they won't and "tie a noose" around the culprit's neck.

I prefer the sperm version of this song. It sounds a lot more blunt and honest. Words don't create people, eggs and semen do. Sperm is what they need to take back. I think it adds to the blunt dread and sickness that is expressed by the song. The world is not a happy place and is it really ok to subject the people who you love most in this world (your children) to these conditions?

To me this is a bitter song that speaks of heartache and betrayal but also of self-righteousness. He knows she made a mistake in leaving him and he's telling her that she made a huge mistake and he won't be there to rescue her but watch her drown happily as he smirks and thinks "I told you so"

The Receiving End Of Sirens – The Crop and the Pest Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about a person who is a leech of sorts. A pest to a perfect crop. As he/she decays he/she attaches to someone who isn't and tries to take them down with them.

"I will treat you so well
I'll take you up from this hell
My gracious host,
you're my lover
won't you be my concubine?

The pleasure's all mine
Your pleasures are all mine "

It's a broken promise, a lie of sorts. Promises and the pretense of love blind her as she becomes nothing more than a concubine to him. He's using her, once again, like a pest eats away at a crop.
