Vox Populi (A Call To Arms) Lyrics
This is a call to arms, gather soldiers
Time to go to war
This is a battle song, brothers and sisters
Time to go to war
Did you ever believe?
Were you ever a dreamer?
Ever imagine heart open and free?
Did you ever deny?
Were you ever a traitor?
Ever in love with your bloodless disease?
This is a call to arms, gather soldiers
Time to go to war
This is a battle song, brothers and sisters
Time to go to war
Ever want to be free?
Do you even remember?
Want to be god and devil like me?
Ever want to just stop?
Do you want to surrender?
Or fight for victory?
Here we are at the start, I can feel the beating of our hearts
Here we are at the start...
Darkness falls, here comes the rain to wash away the past and the names
Darkness falls, here comes the rain to end it all, the blood and the game
Far, far away in a land that time can't change
Long, long ago in a place of hearts and gold
Far, far away in a land that time can't change
Long, long ago in a place of hearts and gold
This is a call to arms, gather soliders
Time to go to war (Far, far away...)
This is a battle song, brothers and sisters
Time to go to war (Long, long ago...)
This is a call to arms, gather soliders
Time to go to war (Far, far away...)

This is a call to arms, way of the night
This is a battle song, way of the night

Just noticed a few things wrong with the lyrics...
Firstly, its not "Ever in love with your bloodless disease?" its "Ever in love with your blood, lust and need?"
Its not "Want to be god and devil like me?" its "Want to be god, the devil like me?"
Its not "Long, long ago in a place of hearts and gold" its "Long, long ago in a place of hearts and ghosts"
And finally its not "way of the night" its "we own night"
If anyone doesn't believe me, then check the 30 Seconds To Mars Official Youtube Channel, it has all of the lyrics from This Is War on there.
!00% Agree! Turn it up and listen. Goog ear!! :)

"Vox populi" means "voice of the people" and the song falls in line with the rest of the album as far as its theme/meaning. "The people" are starting a war, rising up in arms against society and the status quo and the restricting forces of our culture.

i read in an interview with tomo that called this song a love letter to our fans
i agree with the others above for me vox populi is the best song on this is war just because i think it really expresses a lot of emotions and it sounds like it can change things
You feel a energy throughout the whole song, and a warmth at- "Here we are at the start, I can feel the beating of our hearts. Here we are at the start..." amazing song.
It's all amazing stuff. My eyes actually filled with tears while listening to Kings & Queens tonight. The music & message really infiltrate your soul. You get the feeling that you are a part of it all... Here we are at the start. Something great, something huge and we are all a part of it.

A song is like a painting, it can mean a different thing to whoever is observing or listening to it. So this song would probably mean something quite different from a soldier who is currently at the frontlines of war and a mom at home preparing to get the kids to school. This song brings this verse to mind...
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Ephesians 6:10-13
Everyone is at war within themselves and with the unseen evil in this world that wants to destroy our souls, if we believe it or not. The frontline of war begins in our minds. We all have been born into sin and we all have fallen short of God's glory. But now I have come to know that it has all been done, it is finished, on the Cross of Calvary (which means the place of a skull) where my Saviour Jesus died and shed His blood so that I, we all, could live with Him forever. Death is inevitable; the eternal question is where we are going to spend it. I pray everyone that reads this chooses a new life with God and receives the gift of Grace, hope and trust to see you there. Ask Jesus to reveal Himself to you, because he promises to those who seek Him, they will find Him.
BTW... this is an awesome song by 30 Seconds to Mars, really like it.
I hear Bible references to salvation and overcoming the darkness of Satan in all of 30 Seconds to Mars' songs. I think they're very coy about showing their fans The Way, so that's why everybody doesn't interpret the lyrics that way. When someone is ready to hear the Christian message in these songs, they'll have an amazing AHA! moment!

I love that the lyrics are "real" and reflect the ongoing battle between good and evil that everybody fights within themselves; that even those who have chosen Jesus as their Savior have to battle their old nature with their new nature....

Some of the lyrics in this song are problematic for me, and it doesn't help that this page has some inaccurate lyrics. Even the addition or subtraction of different punctuation would change the way I'd interpret some of the lines. The lyrics definitely make one THINK, rather than chant along mindlessly. That's another thing I love about this band's music--it's layered. Simple lyrics that are direct and spare, yet they say so much; what you get out of the song depends upon what you bring to the listening experience. I'm sure that tortured souls can bare their distress through these songs, but I wouldn't know about that personally. I'm limited by my inability to interpret the lyrics apart from the Bible--I keep having those AHA! moments with 30 Seconds to Mars--that I see (in these lyrics) an eagerness to go to war with the forces of evil, the joy of winning the fight, and the assurance of having eternal life in a holy world with our loving Father. I hear a message of hope in knowing we don't have to surrender to our dark proclivities: lust, greed, selfishness, and that there's strength and support in becoming part of the body of Believers. I hear the band calling EVERYBODY to join them and each other in this fight, and to me that's tearfully beautiful.
I agree with you, Candy.
However, I think this song could also be addressing soldiers fighting in the current war by individual thoughts and feelings and what they might be missing or forgetting while away from home.
Or maybe even addressing individual thoughts of people all around, not just soldiers. By leaving your "heart open and free" you get hurt sometimes and this is a call to arms to protect yourself and everyone you love?
Just a thought.
I wish they'd put this out as a single! It's one of the best songs off This is War. It creates such an incredible atmosphere. It like, here we are, one band with a dedicated fanbase we call a family and together we're going to war against the status quo. It's also got a message of "it doesn't matter who you are or what you were, because we've got ourselves a fresh start and we're taking advantage of it". Love it. Absolutely love it.
Only thing I don't quite get is the line "Ever in love with your bloodless disease?". What exactly could a bloodless disease be?
All of 30TM's song is a reference to the bibles prophecy. Here is referring to New World Order.
Please reply with all interpretations of the line "bloodless disease" I've been going crazy trying to figure it out. Thanks! :)
I know 30STM likes to make double meanings... I'm not sure which words they actually wrote

"blood, lust and need"... that's any easy one. Just substitute the words...
Ever in love with your "self", "wants" and "need"

"bloodless disease"... This may be a spiritual disease, or a curse. If you are an alcoholic, many people would call that a disease. A lot of Christians would say it is a generational curse. Ever in love with your drinking, or your bloodless disease? This could mean something which is in your head(cognitive functions or soul), not in your blood.
