Bette Midler – The Rose Lyrics
|
It was originally sung by Bette Midler for the 1979 film "The Rose", which was, believe it or not, loosely based upon the life of Janis Joplin (one of my favorite musicians :)). It was originally titled "Pearl", with a much more accurate storyline, but since the Joplins declined to give them the rights to her life story, they had to change the title and alter the plot greatly.
Hope that helps! |

I love this song (I don't care for the original Arrows version much, though)! I am ashamed to say that I used to hate it when I was little. |

This song isn't necessarily about religion as much as it is about people who use it as an excuse to be hypocrites. She is mocking hypocrisy in this one. |

Sheryl Crow – The First Cut Is The Deepest Lyrics
| 13 years ago

I think this song is about her meeting someone, and wanting to let this person in her heart, wanting to fall in love with this person. But at the same time, she is afraid to do that because she has already had her heart broken and doesn't want that to happen again. |

The first time I heard this song was on the Dixie Chicks' "Top of the World Tour Live" album, both versions are awesome! |

Sarah McLachlan – Mary Lyrics
|
I highly doubt it Sarah is talking about either the virgin Mary or Mary Magdalene, most of the lines seem to sugguest a fictitious woman except for the following:
"Take her hand
she will lead you through the fire
give you back hope
and hope that you won't take too much
respecting what is left
she cradled us
she held us in her arms
unselfish in her suffering she could not understand
that no one seemed to have the time
to cherish what was given"
Certain lines such as the opening ones do not seem to fit with either Mary from the Bible, I do not recall any instance of the Virgin Mary or Mary Magdalene committing suicide, or being offered human flesh for that matter. |

Avril Lavigne – My Happy Ending Lyrics

I think a lot of people can relate to this song (I can't, though), because these things happen. You fall in love with somebody, but eventually it falls apart and things don't work out. In a way, you can think of a broken relationship like a plate that has been smashed to pieces after someone accidentally dropped it (sorry if that was stupid, I just couldn't think of a better way to put it). |

Tori Amos – God Lyrics

I take that comment back. I've done some research on what the Bible has to say about Women, and I misinterpreted it before. It does teach the equality of Men and Women, but people (especially Men) have a tendency to both cherry-pick quotes from the Bible and/or misinterpret it as a whole to make Women feel inferior for being female. |

Trace Adkins – You're Gonna Miss This Lyrics

This song is so true! It's like he's saying "You may be in a rush to grow up, but, one day, you will want this all back, so you need to enjoy it while you can." |

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Sweet Home Alabama Lyrics

GetsomeARRR!, you can just shut your big, fat mouth. I was raised primarily in Texas and I am PROUD of it!!! The comment you made was inconsiderate, ignorant, and, above all, stupid. I am very much offended by what you said and I think you should get off this site if you are going to throw insults at people like that. You ought to be ashamed of yourself. You dumb, stubborn idiot. |

I love this song, but sometimes when I hear it (especially the last line "not tonight, not tonight, not tonight Josephine") I get a twinge of sadness, I don't know why. |

Tori Amos – God Lyrics

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from my understanding, according to the bible, Men are superior to Women in most, if not all, areas. I just wanted to make that point. |

I like this song, it has a positive message to it, and that message is to think about the future and be optimistic about it, rather than dwell on the past. |

Tori Amos – The Waitress Lyrics

I think this song is about having a strong dislike for someone, and having a desire to "get rid of them" so to speak. Notice the beginning lyric "So I want to kill this waitress.". |

I can relate to this song, I criticize myself a lot and beat myself up emotionally if I do something stupid. Or sometimes I just feel like a worthless idiot. |

Tori Amos – Crucify Lyrics

I agree, although I see this song more so as a song about persecution, speaking of religious undertones in the song, Tori once said this:
"The whole Bible Belt banned me for "Crucify" because they thought I was being sacrilegious. They felt that it was detrimental material for their children and that it was blasphemous.", although I highly doubt that she intended to ruffle any feathers with the song.

The Black Crowes – She Talks To Angels Lyrics
| 14 years ago
|
"She never mentions the word 'addiction' in certain company." may be literal, "She'll tell you she's an orphan, after you meet her family." may mean that her family does not accept her, and that she would rather be an orphan than have such a family. "She paints her eyes as black as night." may be a form of resentment, the line "she pulls those shades down tight." may mean that she isolates herself from them (Her family.). "She gives a smile when the pain comes, the pain gonna' make eveything alright." may mean that she is a masochist? "Says she talks to angels, they call her out by her name.", maybe she claims to be able to, I don't know, talk to the dead or something like that (or maybe the drugs cause her to hallucinate)? "She keeps a lock of hair in her pocket." may also be literal, and "the hair is from the little Boy." could mean that it is from a dead child. "And the cross from someone she has not met, not yet." may mean that God has never been a part of her life, but yet she wears a cross (or a necklace with a cross pendant), as if she already has met him, or something like that. "She don't know no lovers, none that I've ever seen" means that she has never fallen in love with a man according to his knowledge, "And to her that means nothing, but to me, it means everything" seems to mean that she doesn't see it as a big deal that she has never had a lover, but to him it seems strange or it makes her stand out or something.
I don't know, just my interpretation. |
