You're Gonna Miss This Lyrics
She was starin' out the window of that SUV
Complainin' sayin' I can't wait to turn 18
She said I'll make my own money and I'll make my own roots
Mama put the car in park out there in front of the school
And she kissed her head and said I was just like you
You're gonna miss this
You're gonna want this back
You're gonna wish these days hadn't gone by so fast
These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you're gonna miss this
Before she knows it she's a brand new bride
In her one bedroom apartment and her daddy stops by
He tells her it's a nice place, she says it'll do for now
Starts talkin' about babies and buyin' a house
Daddy shakes his face and says, "Baby just slow down"
Cause you're gonna miss this
You're gonna want this back
You're gonna wish these days hadn't gone by so fast
These are some good times so take a good look around
You may not know it now but you're gonna miss this
Five years later there's a plumber workin' on the water heater
Dogs barkin', phones ringin', one kid's cryin', one kid's screamin',
And she keeps apologizing, he says, "They don't bother me. I got two babies of my own, one's 36 one's 23. It's hard to believe"
But you're gonna miss this
You're gonna want this back
You're gonna wish these days hadn't gone by so fast
These are some good times so take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you're gonna miss this
You're gonna miss this
Yeah, you're gonna miss this
Complainin' sayin' I can't wait to turn 18
She said I'll make my own money and I'll make my own roots
Mama put the car in park out there in front of the school

This song is soo true... haha
I agree that you should try and make the best of your current life, but I completely disagree with saying "You're gonna miss this". I am in my late thirties and I feel more comfortable with myself than I did in high school. After being with my husband for fifteen years, we have a bunch of history, inside jokes, and we understand each other well. Some of life is what you make it.
I always get super-emotional at that line with the plumber talking about his children. I don't know why, but it touches me!
countryluver: that get me at that part too. every single time!! I really like this song and makes me stop thinking so much of the future and to enjoy everything now.
She said I'll make my own money and I'll make my own roots
i thought it sounded like "I'll make my own rules"
??
i like this song, because a lot of teenagers are in a rush to grow up. and I was, and now I'm about to graduate high school, and I'm saying "where did the time go??" so, now I'm trying to not take life for granted and not try and grow up too fast. because before ya know it, I'll be out in the real world, making decisions for myself. and its scary to think about. so, i really relate to this song a lot.
yes! I just almost cried listening to that part when the plumber talks about his kids. This song literally converted me to country music. I absolutely love it.
I just left my small northern california town, and am now going to an urban 4-year university, and this song gets me so sad!. Im only about an hour and a half's drive from home but i still miss all my family and friends and it makes me so sad that my days of being young and stupid are over. This song always touches me...
Why these country song always makes me cry?!?lol
Somestimes I can't help but be envious about you guys having such great singers singing songs just like this one. In Philippines we do have some good stuff to, but nothing to compare specially to this Trace Adkins' "You're Gonna Miss This"
This song is so true. I just finish my first year of college and boy I remember what high school was like and how much I hated it, but it was a lot easier than some of the things I have to do now. It's been more than a year since I been a student at my old high school and sometimes I wish I could go back and do it all again. I miss it..but I don't at the same time.
One day you'll be older and wiser and you'll realize that the fun doesn't have to end just because the years have changed how you look; how you feel (your energy level); and changed your responsiblities. With wisdom you may just look back and say you'd never wish to be a teen or 20-something again. Life is what we make of it. If you choose to enjoy every minute of it at ANY age, you will. And let's face it, it's a good feeling to be financially secure (as more are at 35 and 50 rather than 18); to have...

And let's face it, it's a good feeling to be financially secure (as more are at 35 and 50 rather than 18); to have children who love you; to not worry about your makeup and clothes (if they're peer-acceptable); and to be able to give back to others due to your security. Priorities change...it's just a fact of life. We either roll with it or we choose to be miserable. And as for sex, it's the older people who know how to do it w/o fear and consequence, and often they do it with someone they love who's loyal an d in it for the long haul :)
Wow, this song makes me almost cry! It's soo true, and really made me realize something. I'm in Jr.High, Grade 8, and for the past year or so, I've been saying "I wanna grow up so I can get out of school, become a veterinarian, live in my own house..the dream life. But this song made me think.. and told me not to take life for granted. Not to sweat the small stuff. And someday, I'm gonna want to be young again, so enjoy life. :)
Yeap, you can never go back in time. Tomorrows always going to be there.
