Yeah I think this might be what you hear on your way to heaven, when the time comes.

I believe this song is an analogy between Autumn and Thanotos; the Greek god of death. Thanatos would carry those whose time had passed into the underworld. The calming caretaker of the falling.

"Whispering" is a metaphor for fading away. "Who will care for the falling?" "Autumn shades, calm my shaking hands" "Suddenly here. When I want to scream, Autumn calms me down, leaves me in my dreams" -- the eternal sleep.

Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens Your faithfulness stretches to the skies And Your righteousness is like the mighty mountain, Yeah And Your justice flows like the ocean's tide And I will lift my voice to worship You, my King And I will find my strength in the shadow of Your wings

This is one of Nena's most meaningful songs to me. The fully German version is more coherent than this version, but this one has its appeal too. My review is of the German version because that conveys the original meaning of songwriters Jörn-Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen and Carlo Karges better than the English version, which, to my mind lapses too much into pure love song, without enough focus on the ephemeral nature of life that is the main theme of the German lyrics.

The first verse introduces two people, motes in the dark falling through space and time (as we all are in the grand scheme of things).
The song first speaks of a future beginning somehow somewhere and sometime, and the singer doesn't want to wait. Love is made from courage, so don't think too much about it, because the fire of our lives burns out so quickly in the darkness of time.
"Give me your hand, I'll build you a palace of sand": everything we build in life is like a sandcastle, and it will eventually be washed away. So "the time is always ripe for a little tenderness, somehow, somewhere, sometime".
In the second and final verse, the meaning is once more brought home: life is like awakening from a dream, and it's only a short blink of an eye before the night closes in on us again.
And in the final passages the meaning is clear: time is short, I don't want to wait, love comes from courage, so don't think about it, because we're riding catherine wheels into the night, so give me your hand, I'll build you a palace of sand, somehow, somewhere, sometime.
Great song.
It's a sweet lyric really, the only thing bothering me is the "Nobody loved you like me" line. Feels so unnecessary in a song where every "Nobody loved you" is screaming "I loved you", I would have liked it more if it was left unsaid... Hovering between the lines

Musically, this song is one of my favourite to belt out. It’s got some amazing runs for the vocalist, the drums in this tune are so interesting… the “tick tick tick” right before the pace change always give me a little thrill. Lyrically, the song is so beautifully analogized as the “speaker” (no pun intended) is singing from the perspective of the actual stereo, the vehicle in which the overall message is conveyed. Ironically, the message is that this valued instrument, the actual material stereo, which we so value and treasure, is merely symbolic of the human we love and adore, value...

Lyrically, the song is so beautifully analogized as the “speaker” (no pun intended) is singing from the perspective of the actual stereo, the vehicle in which the overall message is conveyed. Ironically, the message is that this valued instrument, the actual material stereo, which we so value and treasure, is merely symbolic of the human we love and adore, value and treasure, whom internally fears their ultimate replacement. We upgrade - from a phonograph to a record player, cassette, CD, iPod - move on to the newest, prettiest, most impressive. Lose sight of the love we had - for the “thing” that we expect to give us even much joy. We fear being replaced.. The lyric speaks to the apprehension of becoming older, less appreciated. Less desired. Even obselete. It (the stereo/we) BEGS to move ahead with this unappreciated and thankless relationship we have with the people we strive so hard to please. The message is so sad and deep and beautiful. It should cause pause and reflection, as in this writers humble opinion, despite progress and evolution, we ultimately become more and more in love with the vinyl record player.,. And many search heaven and earth to try to replace one exactly like they once had. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t follow the trends as music evolved. I am happy that I held on to my record player, the thing that gives me so much joy, as it has aged for over 50 years now. I appreciate and treasure it now more than ever, as the “latest and greatest” new thing have long since been left behind. Its lights are like candles. But it’s stood the harshest of circumstances and test of time. So very well written.
