Musically, this song is one of my favourite to belt out. It’s got some amazing runs for the vocalist, the drums in this tune are so interesting… the “tick tick tick” right before the pace change always give me a little thrill. Lyrically, the song is so beautifully analogized as the “speaker” (no pun intended) is singing from the perspective of the actual stereo, the vehicle in which the overall message is conveyed. Ironically, the message is that this valued instrument, the actual material stereo, which we so value and treasure, is merely symbolic of the human we love and adore, value and treasure, whom internally fears their ultimate replacement. We upgrade - from a phonograph to a record player, cassette, CD, iPod - move on to the newest, prettiest, most impressive. Lose sight of the love we had - for the “thing” that we expect to give us even much joy. We fear being replaced.. The lyric speaks to the apprehension of becoming older, less appreciated. Less desired. Even obselete. It (the stereo/we) BEGS to move ahead with this unappreciated and thankless relationship we have with the people we strive so hard to please. The message is so sad and deep and beautiful. It should cause pause and reflection, as in this writers humble opinion, despite progress and evolution, we ultimately become more and more in love with the vinyl record player.,. And many search heaven and earth to try to replace one exactly like they once had. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t follow the trends as music evolved. I am happy that I held on to my record player, the thing that gives me so much joy, as it has aged for over 50 years now. I appreciate and treasure it now more than ever, as the “latest and greatest” new thing have long since been left behind. Its lights are like candles. But it’s stood the harshest of circumstances and test of time. So very well written.
