Musically, this song is one of my favourite to belt out. It’s got some amazing runs for the vocalist, the drums in this tune are so interesting… the “tick tick tick” right before the pace change always give me a little thrill. Lyrically, the song is so beautifully analogized as the “speaker” (no pun intended) is singing from the perspective of the actual stereo, the vehicle in which the overall message is conveyed. Ironically, the message is that this valued instrument, the actual material stereo, which we so value and treasure, is merely symbolic of the human we love and adore, value...

I believe this song is an analogy between Autumn and Thanotos; the Greek god of death. Thanatos would carry those whose time had passed into the underworld. The calming caretaker of the falling.

"Whispering" is a metaphor for fading away. "Who will care for the falling?" "Autumn shades, calm my shaking hands" "Suddenly here. When I want to scream, Autumn calms me down, leaves me in my dreams" -- the eternal sleep.

Here are the actual lyrics exactly how they are sung on the album after carefully listening using AI Voice separation. Due to licensing I cannot directly edit them on this site unless approved by the copyright owners.

Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens Your faithfulness stretches to the skies And Your righteousness is like the mighty mountain, Yeah And Your justice flows like the ocean's tide And I will lift my voice to worship You, my King And I will find my strength in the shadow of Your wings

This is one of Nena's most meaningful songs to me. The fully German version is more coherent than this version, but this one has its appeal too. My review is of the German version because that conveys the original meaning of songwriters Jörn-Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen and Carlo Karges better than the English version, which, to my mind lapses too much into pure love song, without enough focus on the ephemeral nature of life that is the main theme of the German lyrics.

It's a sweet lyric really, the only thing bothering me is the "Nobody loved you like me" line. Feels so unnecessary in a song where every "Nobody loved you" is screaming "I loved you", I would have liked it more if it was left unsaid... Hovering between the lines
