Ok, in regards to this song, Five steps by the Davenports, specifically Scott Klass, lead singer, The official lyrics are absolutely “You know me Ellen enough to know”… This is not opinion, it is fact. Scott also has three other songs where he uses different variations of the name Ellen, such as Elle and Elena. That being said , cover bands as well as the actual bands themselves, will often change some of their lyrics based on a number of different things, such as location of venue to something as simple as the mood they’re in. Which is most certainly the cause of some of the confusion about the lyrics. My ex girlfriend and now good friend is a musician and also appeared on the show Intervention , her name is Kaeleen Brave , and just for a quick plug, she has a new book out available on Amazon called “The Abyss and a Mustard Seed” check it out. She’s told me a number of times that Scott is speaking of a former relationship with a girl named Ellen. It’s even been speculated that Elena is the name of his Mom, not positive about that one , but just throwing it out there . But yes, Ellen is the official lyric to the song with some occasional variations made by both covers and the actual bands themselves.
