I think the song is about parents who want to control their children and dictate their lives, often due to societal expectations. I can't explain it much, but the lyrics make it clear.

It might also have other meanings, like the opinions of older generations about the younger generation, especially since there hasn't been much awareness in this area. Or perhaps it's about teachers who prefer to create a version of themselves in their students rather than creating truly successful individuals. It could also be about the general societal view that people should be copies, not independent individuals.

There are many meanings to the song, and in my opinion, it's one of The Smiths' songs that can have multiple interpretations because, unfortunately, the lyrics apply to many things. But personally, I think the first one I mentioned is the most convincing.
