IT'S NOT A DISS ON BRUCE!
It's the complete opposite. It's an attack on British middle class journalists who can't relate at any level to Bruce's songs (or working class people in general) so dismiss them as being idiots and their art as trite. It's an in character song sung from a the POV of a sneery journo. The irony being that the what the journo is saying is pretty much the sentiment of Bruce's best song "Racing in the Street."
It's a damn clever song and very County Durham (choose yer British town) vs London.
