I'm not going to lie I may have been mishearing this whole time.
I always heard the phrase, 'your feelings and mine are UNholy and I,' rather than 'all holy'.
Perhaps this may have misguided my view of the song's meaning.
Leading into this, I will admit I was probably projecting a bit this song and my misheard lyrics. Maybe?
So, from my point of view, the song was pretty much similar to the general consensus, but rather with some minor religion involvement [which I got from 'holy' and un/all holy] and with the singer and the subject both being female, rather than the subject being male.
So, from my perspective, it seemed like they were both females [keep in mind I misheard part], with either one or both being raised in a religious context [so either the subject was raised religious, or both the singer and the subject, but no other combinations], and had some internalised homophobia while also coming to terms with the fact that they themselves were in love with women.
This is where I thought perhaps the 'necessary evil' and 'you give me an inner sanctity' come in, with perhaps this leaning towards the singer either not being religious, or wanting to break away from their religion, believing that being gay is ok, and using the phrase 'necessary evil' to touch on how the subject thinks being gay is a sin, but how it should be allowed to exist in society.
I also believed that this is why the singer uses the phrase 'inner sanctity', to show how the singer feels safe with their sexuality, and that being in a space where they can express themselves [ie with a girlfriend or fellow gay] provides them with a feeling of safety.
I also believed that there was religious guilt involved in this due to my previous reasoning, as well as the fact that, in the context of my perspective of the song, the idea that they were both females in love with a female [the singer with the subject, the subject with another female] and yet couldn't be together, without any mentions of any violence or needing to hide, suggests that maybe they're not necessarily being pressured to be straight, but that they feel guilty for NOT being straight [Is that worded weird?], and that potentially religion was playing a part [circling back to the beginning of this paragraph].
This would be why they end up laying together.
The singer is in love with a girl who they are chasing, [which is why the subject is Tomorrow at first], who wants to be their current love [which is why the singer is Today], and wants them to leave behind their 'previous'[/current] crush on another female [which is why 'her' word is Yesterday].
However, the subject is stuck in the past of their religious upbringing [which is why they then become Yesterday], so, in the throes of religious guilt, they settle temporarily for someone who is open and ok with being gay [which is why the singer is still Today], before maybe potentially pursuing 'her' in future [which is why 'she' is now Tomorrow].
This is why they lie together; the subject is gay, and sinning with the singer just because they're gay [which is why 'you still want me'] , rather than out of love, and the singer begins to realise this and falls out of love a bit (which is why they are in the twilight), and the subject reaches out to touch them (because maybe they feel guilt), but neither of them can communicate at the right moment.
Maybe there's more but I lost track of what I was saying a while ago, so I hope my waffling isn't too annoying.
Thanks for reading.
