Your word and my word and your word is
Tomorrow, today and yesterday
But it's a necessary evil
And you will find your way there

Your feelings and mine are all holy and
You give me an inner sanctity
You feel the same way that I do for you, about her

Your word and my word and her word is
Yesterday, today and tomorrow
And twilight gives me
An inner sanctity

And you're feeling
And you're hungry for her
And you don't understand it
But you know you haven't planned it

Your feelings and mine are all lonely
And dawn comes you're there lying with me
And you reach out to touch me
But I am in the twilight

Your feelings and mine are all holy but,
You know and I know it's untrue because
When day dawns you're there lying with me
And the dawn can fly away

And you know I love you but you know that
There's nothing you can do about it
Because you love her,
And you still want me

If I could be her...
But I'm not her and she's not me
And you're somewhere different
On a different planet

And you still want it
The inner sanctity
And it's an evil
But the evil is necessary

And you're still hungry for her
And you still want her loving
But she doesn't love you

Okay, so this has been my favorite song for awhile now but I keep thinking to myself, “wow I have no clue what half of this means.” Anyways I decided to try and decipher the beautiful poetry that is this song. Starting from the beginning:

    • the words that they communicate to each other through their relationship are the only word that matter, and are needed for their relationship, this begins to turn sour as he begins to lie about his thoughts and feelings to the singer -the singer feels that he loves her, but actually he is beginning to fall for someone else -the other woman begins to play a role in the relationship, her starting to matter. The singer starts to feel at peace with starting distancing herself from the relationship(twilight being b/w night and day), not wanting to get hurt or overreact because of the other woman -the guy now begins to fully lust over the other woman, something that he hadn’t planned -they both begin to feel lonely as they both start to pull away from the relationship, the singer had already started to pull away from him when he reaches back out to her but it is too late now to go back to the way the relationship used to be (dawn symbolizing rebirth/renewal) -their feelings for each other were pure but not anymore, them holding onto each other (trying to stop the loneliness of starting fall apart from each other) by sleeping together and him leaving in the morning (kinda like a one night stand) -the singer wishes that she was the other woman and her lover had fallen in love with her (the singer) instead of another woman, but she knows this is unrealistic. ((side note: i really dont understand what is going on from here on out)) Meanwhile his thoughts of being with both women are completely unrealistic -He wants to feel at peace with himself but in order for him to do that he has to break his old lover’s heart (that being an evil action b/c she did nothing wrong but try to protect herself from getting hurt) -while he is contemplating his awful act towards his current lover he continues to lust for the other woman who doesn’t even love him in the first place.

Well, I tried my best… hopefully that made some sense But feel free to think of the song however you wish, this is just how I view the song.

This song rocks. Really don't care what it means, 'cause it's so pretty.

Meh. I think it's about a girl who loves a guy who doesn't love her back, but pretends to. Instead, he loves another girl that doesn't love him back. Odds are I'm wrong though.

I always thought it as a girl loves a guy who loves another girl (who doesn't love him.) yet still lusts over the girl who really loves him. That's the way I've always seen it. shrugs

Firstly, I would like to say that I absolutely adore this song. I think it's the perfect way to describe the situation that I am in. This song is about a girl who is in love with a boy, but the boy already loves someone else (a girl that doesn't love him back). Yet, he still somehow wants the girl that likes him. And that's exactly my situation. It's sad to actually come to the conclusion that I have nobody to talk to about this, (it being my biggest problem at the moment) and I have to do it on a site for song meanings. However, it's better than nothing, right? I am in a lot of pain because of this boy and technically this song is the only thing that keeps me going, because it makes me feel like I'm not alone in this situation.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Cajun Girl
Little Feat
Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
