Ok initially i had always assumed that the two characters were a male member of the church and a nun, which is an interesting interpretation to me, but the lyrics never establish the man as a person of god.

To explain this interpretation, i thought that the fact this is taking place at 2AM added to the idea that what they are doing is meant to be in secret, no one can know. On the other hand this can also imply that she has been drinking (she smelled like 2AM).

When they get back to her place, her walls are decorated with religious figures. The next line says they deliver her from grace, which is a phrase that implies she will take punishment for her sins. I thinks this adds to the fact that what theyre doing is wrong, and it will have consequences. With this in mind, the man is aware that he shouldnt continue with what hes doing. This makes me believe that hes a holy man himself in some way, as he seems to fear the repercussions himself, since he seems to pay lots of attention to the way hes breaking religious morals.

Obviously this leads to him calling her s bad girl, since shes sinning. Although this doesnt do much for their situation, since thats kinda a mood setting phrase. I do like to think it adds to the atmosphere, think like someone saying “this is wrong” and fully meaning it, yet it makes the whole act more appealing.

So they still havent done anything yet, but he has yet to put a stop to it. It says that hes having doubts, but its not enough to make him want her any less (under the shadows of doubt, behind a whisper of lust).

He goes on to say that they arent going to touch tonight, implying that there will be others. This once again leads me to think they know each other outside of this, likely through the church. Notably it also never says shes a nun, yet the title implies that she is, once again making me think that he knows her. And it also says she closes her eyes in his trust, implying they have a deeper connection.

She closes her eyes and asks him to tuck her in, although i doubt she thought this is where the night ended. I think its more likely it was a way to get him to her bed. Him knowing that his judgement is sound is just another way to say he is fully aware going any further than this would be wrong. “Still” gives me the impression that despite knowing this, he went ahead anyway.

He pulls back the sheets, which is the opposite of tucking someone in, but could mean hes in the process of doing so. He goes on to say she should lie down, since the angles are watching. This is supposed to be him rejecting the situation, saying its wrong and telling her god will know what they did. She counters him by closing her eyes, almost as to avoid the blame for the situation- “i didnt see it happen,” and then tells him he should stop talking- stop thinking- and to do whatever he likes to her. A very tempting offer.

During the instrumental, im fairly sure they got at least a little busy. This is supported by her words being in italics. Could be interpreted as her moaning, or at least saying things in a suggestive way. The walls being made of broken promises means that they have now sinned. Since the walls were religious figures, they symbolized a promise to god, and now that theyve….the promise has been broken. Also the fact that it was a promise to god helps to imply that shes a nun and hes a holy figure too, as nuns and priests must take an oath of abstinence. Often these members of the church are held to a higher standard to uphold that oath than the people of the church. Him hoping it wont be his broken promise can be taken as him hoping he isnt as guilty as she is, as they are her walls- even if he isnt a preist.

So i already believe that this whole segment is during the act. The fact that hes able to hope it wouldnt be his broken promise means they havent gone all the way yet, and on his end theres still deniability. Her promise has been broken since she initiated this, and in catholic practices, thoughts are the same as actions. Then she goes on and asks him to tell her what to do, and when she says this he knows hes done for. This has two meanings. On one hand, hes done because she once again offers him whatever he wants by saying that, and it temps him too much. And on the other hand, hes done in the sense that he is going to break that promise. The fact that he will now be telling her what to do makes him fully responsible for whatever happens next, and theres no way he will be able to take it back. This leads him to telling her to lie down cause the angels are watching- and judging. He is trying to put an end to this before he breaks his promise too.

She once again says he can do whatever he likes to her to tempt him again, but this time he responds by telling her to shut her mouth cause the angels are listening- and judging. Yet this time, she “crossed herself.” To cross herself is to make the cross on her body, the thing you see Christians do before entering a prayer. By doing this, she is requesting a blessing or reflecting on her actions. The following line says the moments are now missing, which to me means that she was requesting a blessing, permission to continue. She once again says he can do whatever he likes to her, and i believe it is at this point he gives in. Shes requested a blessing, and it’s just too tempting. Maybe god will forgive him.

The instrumental plays again, and i believe its during this that they have sex. We enter the situation again, and hes now glancing through the curtains. Glances are quick looks, which means hes paranoid, and i think hes trying to see if anyones outside- checking for witnesses- while trying to avoid being seen if there are.

She starts asking him questions, probably having to do with what theyve just done. The fact shes talking in 3rd person could mean shes trying to distance herself from the situation- avoiding blame or guilt for her actions. When it says hes “seen everyone one” it confirms that they have in fact slept together. To have seen every one of her “persons” is to have explored her in every way.

Then shes awkward and angry, probably feeling the gravity of her actions and also feeling upset about the way hes reacting to the whole thing. So she tells him to leave. They dont even spent the night.

It goes on to say maybe he should have reconsidered when she was tempting him with the ability to do whatever he liked to her. The repetition of the whole situation shows that hes replaying it in his head, probably thinking about what he could have done differently.

Instrumental plays, and you think the song is over, only for it to come back with a darker vibe. I think this is meant to show the regret and guilt over the situation in the following days (months? Years?), especially with the way that its just the entire situation being recounted again- meaning it happened and nothing can be changed.
