I think its someone who probably messed up over and over in life, a drunk a cheater who never appreciated what he had when he had it either with this Martha, his wife or whoever. Now he's old and nobody wants him anymore and he's suddenly had an epiphany that is was Martha who he loved the most after all and if only he could have one more chance with her. If Martha has any sense she will tell him where to go!
