Today Lyrics

This is one of my favorite KMFDM songs, and one that always hits me when I’m in a particular mood. Personally, I take it as a love song about a codependent relationship, and the longing, feelings of emptiness, and time dilation that come with the other’s absence, either due to neglect, distance, or addiction. In this state of lonely pondering, the narrator becomes acutely aware of the passage of time and the state of impermanence of all things in life. I believe he comes to a realization that his attachment to this other person is causing him to let his life pass him by, and has the epiphany that in order to regain a sense of vitality, he must let go of his attachment to this person and reluctantly say goodbye. But that’s just what it means to me, and what I glean from the lyrics.

Alternatively, despite the lyrics being written by Tim Skold, a relatively new official member of the band at this juncture, it could have been about Sascha Konietzko’s strained relationship with other longtime KMFDM bandmates En Esch and Gunter Schulz, who had minimal participation in the writing and recording of the album. They had previously had significant involvement in the five albums before this one, and if I remember correctly, Sascha seemed to feel as if he was pulling teeth trying to get those two to engage in the creative process.

The album, Adios, was originally intended as a farewell to their record label, Wax Trax, but also marked the departure of En Esch and Gunter Schulz, and ultimately, the breakup of the band itself, though they would reform three years later with a new lineup.

So in that sense, it could be about any of these things, and even possibly the codependent love song as a metaphor for Sascha reluctantly feeling the need to “say goodbye” - to his former bandmates, his label, or the band itself.

[Edit: Wanted to clarify that the band reformed with a new lineup]
