Today Lyrics

Isolation
When you leave its like I disappear
Desolation
Everytime you go it feels like
Seconds slowly turn to minutes
A month of sundays coming up
Time again pulls me under
Wonder if I'll rise above
It's too much but not enough

Misery loves company
For a little bit of sympathy

It's here today but it's gone tommorrow
It's here today and today will never come again

Desperation
Sinking into somewhere dark and cold

Deviation
A place I knew I did not want to go
To forget is all I know

Minutes slowly turn to hours
Another moment passes by
Seconds of eternity
I wonder if it's time to say goodbye

Awesome song!

This is one of my favorite KMFDM songs, and one that always hits me when I’m in a particular mood. Personally, I take it as a love song about a codependent relationship, and the longing, feelings of emptiness, and time dilation that come with the other’s absence, either due to neglect, distance, or addiction. In this state of lonely pondering, the narrator becomes acutely aware of the passage of time and the state of impermanence of all things in life. I believe he comes to a realization that his attachment to this other person is causing him to let his life pass him by, and has the epiphany that in order to regain a sense of vitality, he must let go of his attachment to this person and reluctantly say goodbye. But that’s just what it means to me, and what I glean from the lyrics.

Alternatively, despite the lyrics being written by Tim Skold, a relatively new official member of the band at this juncture, it could have been about Sascha Konietzko’s strained relationship with other longtime KMFDM bandmates En Esch and Gunter Schulz, who had minimal participation in the writing and recording of the album. They had previously had significant involvement in the five albums before this one, and if I remember correctly, Sascha seemed to feel as if he was pulling teeth trying to get those two to engage in the creative process.

The album, Adios, was originally intended as a farewell to their record label, Wax Trax, but also marked the departure of En Esch and Gunter Schulz, and ultimately, the breakup of the band itself, though they would reform three years later with a new lineup.

So in that sense, it could be about any of these things, and even possibly the codependent love song as a metaphor for Sascha reluctantly feeling the need to “say goodbye” - to his former bandmates, his label, or the band itself.

[Edit: Wanted to clarify that the band reformed with a new lineup]

My Interpretation

it could mean anything, but I think it's fun to let your mind come to its own conclusion...

Yeah.. "It" in the chorus could apply to practically anything. The song makes one realize how things are temporary and such.

Best song on the album! :)

My Opinion

The song must be about one who is utterly depressed, edgy, and thinking about committing suicide/homicide. They fell themselves at odds with the whole community, society "Sink somewhere dark and cold\'- the line simply depicts that the person is in the outer world, but not with the human beings, the person lowkey understands that their life of his is relatively meaningless, however hard he tries. The tiredness of the whole universe is also shown, he wonders "whether it\'s about time he said goodbye"

@AmirShihadi228 The author also notices that there is clearly no use keeping on living, inasmuch as every day is exactly the same "another moment passes by" at this very time " the month of Sundays is coming up", meaning that the rough patch is gonna be unbearable.\r\n
