This is my all time favorite song and i have a very different interpretation of the lyrics than what ive seen people say. In my opinion the song is about war.what i mean is just listening to specific lyrics like “hear the engines purr”. I think its a man that has gone to war and this song is a letter he sending to his love back home. Look at the first lyrics. I am lost in a rainbow. I think hes saying he is lost is lost in the unknown, like he does know whats gunna happen to him. Next lyric is overcast by your shadow. This is him expressing she is always on him mind and it torments him knowing he might not be able to come back as the next lyric states “as our worlds move on”, he’s literally meaning theyr a world apart. The next part with the shirt thing i think he has an heirloom he keeps to think of her with and maby it is a shirt he wears. Then the crane thing. Its a metaphor for how long hes been apart from her they’re memories are fading away. The next part i think is the most obvious. He has to wake up really early so he can move forward in whatever war hes in and so he wakes to hear the engines of trucks or war machines. And i remind you he’s writing this in a letter he says theres a pain it does ripple. Here it’s probably both literal and metaphorical. Hes in war and he’s hurting, hes weak. But also hes hurt because he again doesn’t know if he will come back and that hes been gone for so long. Also im guessing this song is written at a time where the war has been going for a long time. The next couple lyrics are more emotional explanations and such. Then we get to another obvious line. “I dare to tell you that i love you, it never ends. And i bled now every day now for a year for a year” ok. We get a timeline. One year in war. Thats alot of time. A whole year of war. And he bled every day for her hes doing it all for her. Then next lyrics are talking about him trying to give a letter to her but he doesn’t know if she even got it and then he says he can hear her call his name maby in a dream or maby theres a twist to the whole song.. maby he dies there in war and all of this is his last thoughts.
