I think this song switches between perspectives. At first he's talking about the hopelessness one person feels, but in the chorus it seems like he's saying he wants to be there for this person. He eventually makes it about seeing that there is more than this person sees. Life can be more and he'll be there until they find what's worth living for. Either that or he's been there and when the perspective seems to change, it's really him paying the favor forward to the next person in need.
