How I see it related to depression is that the "twinge" was the initial sadness / stressor and from there things spiralled downwards ("I never meant to get lost"). Now they seem stuck in their state and can't see a way out from it.

I always thought that if depression were a song, this is what it would sound like... It's so haunting but beautiful..
