Maybe in Smile he's talking about his frustration that his father just couldn't have hope for his big dreams and plans. Maybe he smiled patronizingly when Bono discussed making music. As a working class man, perhaps his father simply couldn't accept that dreaming that big was a good idea.

And knowing how precious that can be, his father’s smile is to be vulnerable. And faced with exposing his own youthful dreams, he is also faced with the same things his father faced- to smile, to hope and dream will only bring unhappiness.
