"Smile" as written by and Dave Evans Adam Clayton....
Gravity, is not pulling me
I won't be a picture with no sign
Decaying, I'm praying
You are my air but
I need the ground to kneel upon
And love can't be a song
I don't want to see you smile

I'm breaking it, taking it
I'm breaking it slowly in mind
I'm seeing it, freeing it
I know love is in this soul of mine
It's not in your eyes
I don't want...
I don't want to see you smile

I started, light-hearted
It won't be easy like you said
I'm going, flowing
I'm leaving on the day of the dead
I will live again
You will live again
I don't want to see you smile

God knows it, knows me
Knows me, knows me
You sing, hear me love
Say it again, burnt out blind
The smoke machine is yours not mine
I don't want to see you smile

I will live again
You will live again
I just don't want to see you smile

General CommentAlthough no one has asked (yet), Smile was part of the "digital album" Unreleased & Rare, which was part of the iTunes U2 Digital Boxset "released" the same day as HTDAAB. I've heard rumors that this digitial album and/or songs are finally available for purchase (through iTunes) separate from the Digital Boxset. There are some real gems. Take a look at the tracklisting:

General CommentI love this song! :]
For the lyrics, I'm not sure what they mean actually. Since it's a demo, I guess the lyrics are kind of unfinished.
"I don't wanna see you smile" can mean that he doesn't want you to fake a smile and just say that everything is all right, if it's not. That's about as far as I get...

General CommentIn reference to Sometime You Can't Make it On Your Own: Bono says, in regards to his father: "His whole thing was, Don't dream - to dream is to be disappointed."

Maybe in Smile he's talking about his frustration that his father just couldn't have hope for his big dreams and plans. Maybe he smiled patronizingly when Bono discussed making music. As a working class man, perhaps his father simply couldn't accept that dreaming that big was a good idea.
