We know Jack White was raised Roman Catholic and almost went into the seminary to become a priest. So, my understanding of the lyrics go back to Catholic teachings.
“Will there be enough water when my ship comes in?”
Water can mean spiritual cleansing with acceptance and forgiveness from God. Similar to how we are baptized in holy water when we’re born in original sin, the same goes for after death. Meaning when he dies (When his ship comes in), will there be enough forgiveness (water) from God to forgive him his sins.
Which leads to…
“Just because you caught me, does that make it a sin?”
Is it still sinning if nobody noticed (God)? We’re always being watched by God but if we weren’t, would the same things we did be considered sinful?
