Will there be enough water?
When my ship comes in
Water, when my ship comes in
Will there be water?
When my ship comes in

When I said sail,
Will there be enough wind?
When I said sail,
Will there be enough wind?
When I said sail,
Will there be enough wind?
Cool water
Oh cool wind

Just because you caught me,
Does that make it a sin?
Yeah, just because you caught me,
Does that make it a sin?

Just because you
Cool water
Yeah and that cool wind

Enough water
When my ship comes in
Be enough water
When my ship comes in

When I said sail,
Will there be enough wind?
Oh cool water
Yeah and that cool wind

Just because you caught me,
Does that make it a sin?
Just because you caught me,
Does that make it a sin?

Will there be enough water?
When my ship comes in
Water when my ship comes in
Will there be water?
When my ship comes in

I think this is someone questioning their future, asking if there will be enough to get him sailing through life (of opportunity or luck) when his time comes. But yes, when performed live, seems to turn audio-sex.

We know Jack White was raised Roman Catholic and almost went into the seminary to become a priest. So, my understanding of the lyrics go back to Catholic teachings. “Will there be enough water when my ship comes in?” >> Water can mean spiritual cleansing with acceptance and forgiveness from God. Similar to how we are baptized in holy water when we’re born in original sin, the same goes for after death. Meaning when he dies (When his ship comes in), will there be enough forgiveness (water) from God to forgive him his sins. Which leads to… “Just because you caught me, does that make it a sin?” >> Is it still sinning if nobody noticed (God)? We’re always being watched by God but if we weren’t, would the same things we did be considered sinful?

pretty sweet song. not sure what it means. but it does have this real gritty bluesy natural feel both in the music and in the lyrics. the piano is really hypnotic and jack's guitar is so old time soundin. the lyrics are just really simple which i love. just the wind and the water. i get the image of a man on a small raft/boat in the middle of the ocean in the middle of a storm.

It's extremely mysterious though. Do you think that the phrase "Just because you caught me, does that make it a sin?" gives the key to the reste of the song, which is more lyrical and vague ? Then it could say something about men/women relationships I guess

it was apparently part of a long 20 minute jam with made up lyrics. they took 6 minutes and put it on the album. Alison was surprised because she couldn't remember recording the song. i don't think the lyrics are particularly meaningful. Sexy as hell when performed live though.

When my good times finally get here will i be able to get there? When it's time for me to get out or leave will i be able to? Just because you caught me, Does that make it a sin? All i need is some Cool water And the cool wind Damn this is a great, moody, dark, and ohhhh so soulful song. I could jam to this for 20 minutes at a time and start it all over again.

    My Interpretation
I always get the image of a man at a bar, drinking water (Beer). The term water is used instead because it's become just another drink to him. Then I get the feeling he's asking will there be enough to get him by for his reckoning. "Will there be enough water, When my ship comes in? And when I set sail, Will there be enough wind?" After all this he's asking if it really matters what he's done and that last verse for cool water and cool wind is him starting over with real water and leaving the bar. "Just because you caught me, Does that make it a sin? Cool water And the cool wind ."

I think this song makes a lot of sense. 'When my ship comes in' is a common phrase, as in, when opportunity comes. It's basically saying, when my opportunity arises, will I be able to take it? will it get me anywhere? I'd love to know the meaning behind the line 'just because you caught me, does that make it a sin?'.

The song as it is on the album is great. Seeing it preformed live - is by far the best ever. Jack's guitar solos are always amazing. I've been lucky enough to see it three times - once from front row (shot video, put it on youtube) - there are just no words.

Moyet later described how her song "Goodbye 70's" had been inspired by her disillusionment with how the late-1970s punk scene had turned out, saying, "'Goodbye 70's' is about punk and not caring how you were dressed, and then I discovered that so many of my friends that I'd thought it all really meant something to just saw it as another trend... That's what 'Goodbye 70's' was all about, about how sour the whole thing became."

Matt Shadows their lead singer says the song was written as per request from the developers of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Watching the initial trailers for the game & looking at production sketches reminded him of the 'S-Town' podcast & its main protagonist, John B. McLemore. Matt also comments specifically on the lyrics: "I decided that the lyrics would shadow McLemore's life." In 2012, antiquarian horologist John B. McLemore sent an email to the staff of the show 'This American Life' asking them to investigate an alleged murder in his hometown of Woodstock, Alabama, a place McLemore claimed to despise. After a year of exchanging emails & several months of conversation with McLemore, producer Brian Reed traveled to Woodstock to investigate. Reed investigated the crime & eventually found that no such murder took place, though he struck up a friendship with the depressed but colorful character of McLemore. He recorded conversations with McLemore & other people in Woodstock. McLemore killed himself by drinking potassium cyanide on June 22, 2015 while the podcast was still in production. In the narrative of the podcast, this occurs at the end of the second episode; subsequent episodes deal with the fallout from McLemore's death while exploring more of McLemore's life & character.
