I always thought of this as more of someone dying.
Atleast the first part fits that
Face them (like open casket look at them and accept their dead)
The time will erase them (time will heal all wounds)
Stop trying to chase them (don't try to keep them alive)
I've taken my place (the dead person taking their place in the world)
And it's not worth the tears (its not worth crying over the person cause it happens)
Cast a shade to save your eyes
Take this time to turn and say goodbye
(walking away from the casket and saying goodbye)
Also I always thought about the music video being for this in the snow..
