When I hear this song, I think of spending your final moments with a dying loved one.

"Here I am waiting... We knew this day would come... How did it come so fast?"

We knew that you would have to leave us, but I never thought so soon.

"This is our last night but it's late and I'm trying not to sleep cause I know when I wake I will have to slip away"

I know it's late but I'm going to cherish every single minute with you before I say goodbye.

"And when the daylight comes I'll have to go, but tonight I'm going to hold you so close..."

Don't worry about the end. I'm here now, so let's cherish this.

"Here I am staring at your perfection in my arms, so beautiful. The sky is getting bright, the stars are burning out somebody slow it down."

We're getting closer to it. Somebody slow it down.

"I was afraid of the dark but now it's all that I want."

This would be an interesting line assuming that the sick relative we are talking about is a mother or a father or a parental figure in the singer's life. As a kid they would try to protect him from his fears such as the dark. and ironically now the singer is wanting nothing but the dark as a symbol for time stopping.
