Riku has difficulty being open so the backwards parts (I need more affection than you know) are things that he can't say. With "a new land" I take it as a fresh start of sorts. Riku has made a lot of really heavy mistakes, but his friends hold it against him. His "fears and lies melt away" because he's been forgiven. A sanctuary is a place of safety. Riku is safe with his friends.
"I watch you fast asleep"
This line refers to Sora sleeping for a year.
"All I fear means nothing"
Riku has been dealing with the fear of his own darkness, but that has to be put on hold. Right now, the only thing that matters is making sure Sora is okay.
The backwards lines refer to Riku's own emotional state. He's dealing with a lot of guilt and loneliness. "My heart's a battleground" could be referring to his battle with Ansem.
"You show me how to see/That nothing is whole and nothing is broken"
When Riku finally meets up with Sora and Kairi again, he's so ashamed at himself but they accept him wholeheartedly. I feel like this line is Riku understanding that world isn't black or white, or whole or broken. You can make mistakes and still be loved.
Basically Riku's character development is beautiful and I think this song portrays it perfectly.
I feel like this song is from Riku's perspective.
