I have only just found this song but my thoughts are that it is about so much more than just relationships and more about finding someone, falling in love, starting a family and living your lives together. I have added my thoughts to the sections of the lyrics below;

With a hammer and nails and a fear of failure we are building a shed - Building a home together

Between here and heaven, between the wait and the wedding For as long as we both shall be dead to the world

  • From getting married, living our lives until "the wait" until our time on this planet is finished.

    Beyond the boys and the girls trying to keep us calm We can practice our lines ’til we’re deaf and blind To ourselves, to each other, where it’s

    • having children, doing your best to raise them into successful adults (I remember practicing/repeating lines regularly to my kids)

    Fall, not winter; spring, not summer; cool, not cold And it’s warm, not hot; have we all forgotten that we’re getting old?

    • The years keep going, we keep living our lives with all it's ups and downs and one day we look in the mirror and an go Man, I've got old, how did that happen? ( believe me, this will happen to us all)

    With an arrow and bow and some seeds left to sow, we are staking our claim On ground so fertile, we forget who we’ve hurt along the way

    • We've created a family, which has been our focus and priority

    And reach out for a strange hand to hold Someone strong, but not bold enough to tear down the wall ’Cause we ain’t lost enough to find the stars ain’t crossed—why align them? Why fall hard, not soft into

  • When you are young, you want to take on the world. As you get older your priorities change, and you realise that falling and staying in love, creating a happy home, having children and raising them to successful adults and growing old together is where real happiness lies.

    Fall, not winter; spring, not summer; cool, not cold Where it’s warm, not hot; have we all forgotten that we’re getting old?

Anyway, this is what this song says to me. I've already told my family that I want this played at my funeral (which I hope is a few years away yet) as I think it sums up what's important in life - falling in love, staying in love, creating a happy family and home.
