I think our fathers relationship (often a fractured relationship as in this song) with his family is one of the most real things in life and there are very few songs that explore that. Rodrigeous was doing that in his early 20s.

@ChrisWilmott where in this song does it talk about anyones "deathbed"? you've really took this one to a level that might be more befitting to your own personal experience, this song is about himself and for the few who might can relate... his life was such a peculiar one as a drifter/vagabond and a frequent buyer of prostitutes, he really just is writing about how he really has died inside and has no more joy and bitterly recalls the last meeting with his father.... love yourself bro, do not deny your ambitions, SEEK YE FIRST the Kingdom of God...
