It does not matter what my relationships are. Rodriguez was brilliant enough to be writing about more than love songs and drug experiences. He is certainly saying the woman he is writing about is vain, but I dont believe it is a girl friend or wife though. The clues are subtle. "If he likes you so much, if hes tying so hard" references her husband. "and dont you understand and dont you look about" references his mother saying "I understand" in a sarcastic manner to the sons frustrations with some parent/teenager conflict. Her manner of rolling her eyes and looking about expresses her disdain for the teenagers thoughts. I dont think it relates to his actual mother either. I think he is just an insightful observer of human foibles. |

Thanks for the reply mate What do you mean by "a song for the real ones"? he saw his reflection in his fathers final tears. The tension between them was slowly disappearing. I think our fathers relationship (often a fractured relationship as in this song) with his family is one of the most real things in life and there are very few songs that explore that. Rodrigeous was doing that in his early 20s. Rosmary is carrying on in a way he disapproves of, Ruth has already disappeared, he has not lived his dreams of youth and his wife mocks him. Only on his death bed does his differences with his son "disappear" It is an powerfull song of a man, the singers father, who was totally ineffectual. I have a ticket to see him in October. Its a song about two gay guys breaking up. The singer is dumping his lover, throwing hurtful statements at him. Even throwing back at him a statement he has made in anger about the singer "you were born for the purpose that crucifies my mind" |
