I feel like this song is about a young war veteran or a soldier who has lost a lot of friends. "I know that tone, I remember the first time .. waiting for a friend to call and say they're still alive" means he's lost more than one important person in his life.
At first he says that he's given everyone he knows a good reason to go, as in leave him, but was surprised that "you" stuck around - this is someone he loves, maybe a girlfriend or lover who sticks with him. I think this is the same person he refers to later when he says she fell from the sun. He puts up a front of happiness/being okay, but knows that his unhappiness affects her too ("I see you burning out")
He also says that he never claimed to be more than a one night stand, so I think perhaps he was trying to push her away at one point, but she still stuck around.

He's talking about a different kind of leaving, one where he comes back: he justifies/believes his reason for going to war, but in reality it has affected him deeply.
