I always took it as some sort of horrible love story. Where one person was dedicated to the other, but eventually they did something so unforgivable that they felt the only way to make it up to the one they hurt, was to get out of their life.
in the song, the person singing clearly describes basically the furthest distance away from the other that they can possibly be without making the song sound kinda silly. ( For all you people going "Oh no, he could be a billion light years away, or a trillion... ect.) Because basically they want their former love to be as far away from them as possible so there will never be a worry of bringing up the horrible thing that has come to pass.
