For me this song is about living, or an absence of living - "Eat, Shit, and Die". I think this song directly links with Mr. Gone with the ending "Please keep from making any trouble". It's about someone who goes through life keeping their head down, staying out of trouble and never amounting to anything. In my view, anyway.

I saw the singer as a petty juvenile delinquent who was reminiscing about a partner-in-crime that he had a brief but memorable fling with before even learning their name. Maybe the singer needs to straighten up a little and the listener needs to loosen up a little more.
