I read the lyrics many times and I came up with this fantastic interpretation:
this song is about someone who's dieing. While this is happening he's thinking of his family (which is now broken because of his death), he did something which may appear wrong like telling a lie to not hurt someone. So he is hoping that while the time goes by after his death his family understands why he did those things in the past.
